Dimebag Darrell, guitarist for Pantera and Damageplan, was one of at least four people fatally wounded during a bizarre shooting at a concert in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday night.

According to Columbus NBC affiliate NBC4, Dimebag —

real name Darrell Abbott — was among the fatalities resulting from the incident, which occurred during a Damageplan performance at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus. Authorities did not release the names of any of the other fatalities to NBC4. Columbus police told MTV News that the gunman killed four people and wounded two before being shot and killed by a police officer.

One witness told the NBC affiliate that a man jumped onto the stage during the first song of the band's set and began firing a gun. According to the witness, the man fired several shots at the band before being tackled by club security. One of the survivors is in critical condition at a local hospital, while another is in fair condition.

"A Columbus police officer, when he arrived, engaged the shooter, and the shooter is also dead, and if the officer hadn't acted when he did and how he did, we'd probably be looking at more dead, because this guy was actively shooting," Sergeant Brent Mull, a public information officer, told MTV News.

"We have 200-plus patrons that we have sequestered inside three city buses," Sergeant Mull explained. "We are interviewing them one by one. The ones that were inside and witnessed this ran for their lives and were in fear for their lives. They are victims too, and we want to take care of them."

As news of Dimebag's bizarre and tragic demise rippled through the metal community, the news was met with shock and sadness.

"I'm speechless," former Rob Zombie/ Ozzy Osbourne bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson said. "This is totally unreal. Dimebag is a f---ing legend and this is total bullsh--."

"This is insane and this is beyond travesty," Killswitch Engage frontman and former Damageplan tour partner Howard Jones said. "This is beyond anything I've ever heard. This shouldn't happen in or outside of the rock and metal community. He will be missed and mourned as a person, as a musician, and as a friend."

Sad stuff - that guy was a great guitarist. Scary that this kind of thing can happen so easily at almost any venue.

Yeah, I was bummed when I heard that this morning.

Anyone heard anything about Vinnie Paul? He was supposedly shot at during the incident, but I have not heard if he was hit and what condition he is in...

Reports are that Vinnie was hit in the leg, but will be OK.

RIP Dime, you will be missed.

Oh, and apparently they were filming the show for a possible DVD. Let's just hope that footage doesn't make it to the Internet.

One report said that the shooter was heard to say "You fu**ing broke up Pantera" as he began to shoot.

Damn.

Heart goes out to Dime's family, particularly his brother Vinnie - the drummer for Damageplan. Can't imagine the pain of seeing a brother killed, particularly over something like this.

Just freaking sick man. Not to mention he couldn't even be afforded the priviledge of going out on his home turf in Texas. What a SOB!!!

That's a shock to say the least. How did this freak get a gun into the concert? It must have been some little club where they don't pat you down (unlike the larger venues).

A sad day for Texas Music in general. I'm a fan of Pantera and Dimebag just as much as I am of Willie, SRV, or George Strait. Texas did produce one of the greatest HM bands of all time, and Dimebag will always be remembered at the top of the totem pole of great guitarists.

Buck- I can't remember the last time I was patted down (or where they used metal detectors) at a concert here in Dallas. About the only two that come to mind over a decade of countless shows was Ozzfest at Starplex and Black Sabbath (with Pantera opening, ironically) at Reunion.

Edit- The AAC has permanent metal detectors installed. (I avoid that place like the plague, though.)

On a brighter note, that Sabbath/Pantera concert tour absolutely ROCKED. WOW...I've seen Sabbath 3 times and that was bar none the best performance. And Pantera just killed opening. Awesome, awesome show.

not that it really matters, but it was the lead singer, phil anselmo, who broke up the band

too bad, he was one of the best guitarists out there. He definitely created his own signature and will be missed in a world of simple and crappy rock music

No ****, and he's a total ****ing ***** too. Why couldn't it have been him instead?

I've met Dime and Vinnie on a few occasions and they've always been gracious.

I hardly ever got patted down at a concert. I always thought it was funny that if I went to a small club like Numbers or clubs in bad parts of town I never got patted down, but when I go to the Woodlands and am surrounded by preppy white kids they bust out all the stops.

Jim01: I was patted down at venues as small as The Engine Room when tours like Iced Earth came through.

Iced Earth? Didn't Richard Christy used to be their drummer?

I don't know - I only started listening to them when Tim Owens came aboard as the new singer. Tim's a good fit with John Schaeffer (guitar player and band founder).

Dallas Stars Hockey Team Send Condolences In DAMAGEPLAN Nightclub Shooting [Hot Flashes - 04.12.09 13:36:44]

KGBT4 (www.team4news.com) has issued the following report:

The former Dallas heavy metal rock band PANTERA formed a close bond with the Dallas Stars. They even wrote a heavily percussive fight song for the Stars 1999 Stanley Cup champion team.

Stars President Jim Lites and two linchpin players of the '99 team expressed their sorrow over the death of Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

Abbott was shot and killed as he, brother Vinnie Paul Abbott and other members of their new band, DAMAGEPLAN, began a performance at a Columbus, Ohio, nightclub. Three other people were killed and two others were wounded last night before police shot the gunman dead.

Lites said in a statement that the Stars' "thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims of this attack and hope that all of the injured make a full recovery."

Former Stars defenseman Craig Ludwig said the Abbott brothers "weren't just hockey fans, they were friends of the entire team." He added "'Dime' will be missed very much."

Former Stars captain and current assistant general manager Guy Carbonneau (KAHR'-buh-noh) said he "was horrified to hear the news of last night's events, and it never ceases to amaze me how hurtful and violent people can be." He said his condolences "go out to the family" and he wished "all those involved a speedy recovery."

Just swung by the Clubhouse on my lunch break to see what was going on and there is a little memorial building outside the front door. They have places for you to sign and leave a message, if you wish. Lots of flowers candles, etc.

I grew up here in DFW and had a buddy who was close friends with Dimebag and Vinne. We met them back in 90 at a club called The Basement that used to be in Dallas. I never really hung out with them much, but heard stories. Then got to see some of their antics on the memorial DVD that was made for my friend when he died. Those were some crazy guys man. I would've liked to have been there for some of the fun...especially the firework fights in the pantera house aka clubhouse

Was Dimebag from Dalworthington Gardens/Pantego like the other guys? For some reason I thought he was from out of state.

Nah...I read he was born here in Dallas. His dad was a country music writer.

I actually got to hang out with him one night in Houston in 2002. Knew who Pantera was, didn't know he was in the group until we left. nice guy. RIP.

Dime, Vinny, and Rex grew up in Arlington actually. I think Vin still has a house there.
