How many more episodes are there this season?

If there’s something on TV half as good as this, I don’t know what it is. Every episode now seems to have an ‘oh ****!!!’ moment without going over the edge.

tonight was epi 34. I believe they run 12-13 eps per season, so probably 2-3 episodes left.
This season has been good, but IMO it isn't quite as good as the first 2 seasons.

*Edit* holy sh*t! tonight was good. i never thought they'd do Prez like that. The past 2-3 episodes have been really good, and the last 3 look really good.
The doo-doo is really fixing to hit the fan for Bunny, and for stringer and avon. Brother Mouzone is coming back, and Omar is pissed.
I'd really like to see that ass hole Senator Clay Davis get what he deserves.

Wow, I'm so glad someone else is watching this show. I've said it before: this is better than anything else (even The Sopranos) on TV right now. This could even eventually take the title of The Greatest Television Show of All Time from Lonesome Dove.

Anyways, what an episode. I see Prez, Colvin, and Carcetti all gonna get flattened by the end of the season. I'm not sure how Barksdale and Bell are going to end up. I really like Marlo. Omar is on a rampage.

I remember how sad and tragic the end of last season was, yet it was still satisfactorily resolved. This season's conclusions could turn out to be just as heart-wrenching.

I don't know that the Carcetti thing will play out this season. I think it might be something that extends to next season. I actually think Carcetti's plan is pretty damn smart. He's a White Democrat in a democrat town that is mostly black. He can't win Mayor by himself against a black incumbent, so he convinces his bllack buddy councilman to run against the mayor. These guys will split the black vote, and then Carcetti can enter the primary late in the game and win with the white vote. It will be interesting to see if it works.

I totally didn't see the Prez thing coming. Very good writing. They took him from being a screwup in season one, to the guy who cracked the pager code. He was then the solid computer guy for all of S2 and most of S3. Now he killed a cop.
I wonder what will happen to the team of guys working Hamsterdam for Bunny? Are Herc and Carver going to get screwed over by brass?

Was Stringer rolling on Avon?

The Wire is the best show on television. Realistic, refusing to bow to PC, well acted, and unpredictable.

great episode tonight. lots of great scenes:
daniels telling mcnulty "everybody's a piece of sh*t when they're standing in your way"
freemon working undercover selling the tapped phones.
rawls at the gay bar - wow.
bunny colvin's scenes with carver, mcnulty, the COMSTAT scene, and the mtg in the police commissioner's office.

great stuff. it sucks that the next episode isn't for 2 weeks.

Bubbles is smooth.

Freamon is smoother (as a con).

McNulty actually possesses some humility.

Marlo is COLD.

I dig Mouzone, but he's a bit of a cartoon.

I hadda do the TiVo doubletake to confirm Rawls' weekend activities. Ha!

Colvin seems to be taking all this in stride. What else did he think was gonna happen? If Hamsterdam turns into a big story around town, that cush Hopkins gig he has lined up could be pulled if they connect him to it.

Great episode. Great Holy Sh*t! moment. Can't wait for two more weeks.

Crap, my Sunday routine is all screwed up now; we have to wait another week.

I think significant events are going down this episode, with the final week's episode setting things up for next season. Predictions anyone?

Avon gets it from Omar? Omar gets it from Mouzone?

Colvin takes the fall for Hamsterdam? Burrell? Rawls even? Nah, too big of an assh*le (and compelling character) to take him off the show.

Cutty somehow gets wrapped into the Barksdale feud? I like Cutty and don't want to see him get swept up.

What do you think?

wow. great ep. stringer got "git".
it kind of makes me sad, though, because there are rumors that HBO might not renew The Wire, and them killing off Stringer Bell lends very nicely to a series finale. The title for next week's season (hopefully not series) finale is "Mission Accomplished".

... aaaand I've added this show to my Netflix queue. What season is currently airing? There are only two seasons on Netflix.

foc - season 3 is fixing to end. seasons one and 2 were excellent. i imagine they will be even better when watched over a couple of days instead over 6 months.

It does look like they are working to the end of the series doesn't it? They could go the political route, follow Marlow, or go in a completely different direction but I don’t see it happening.

I don't think it looks like they are wrapping up the series at all. They've got a lot of directions they could go in; plus, there is always the possibility of them creating an entirely new storyline like they did with the docks in Season 2. With most of their series (especially the Soprano's), HBO has not been hesitant to knock off a key character and keep on plugging. The Wire has already off'd guys that played key roles in the first two season - "D" from season 1 and the dock manager from season 2. Stringer is definitly the biggest fish to fry so far though. Besides the political angle and Marlow, they've still got the main cheese Barksdale in place, and with Bell gone, the whole Prop Joe alliance is probably going to go up in flames. Lots of stories available there.

Overall, this is definitely my favorite drama series HBO has going right now - since both the Sopranos and Six Feet lost some steam after their first couple of seasons. Those shows are still good, but I hope the Wire can maintain it a little better.

I agree that there are still an infinite number of directions they can go, but if you don't think that HBO is close to not renewing the show, take a look around. Neither ratings nor awards nominations have been there at all for this show. I think it is the best show on TV, but after just one season, Deadwood and Carnivale have both jumped it in the HBO pecking order.
HBO has not renewed this yet for a 4th season. You can bet your ass that this season was written with enough conclusion that if there is no season 4, it won't leave you hanging. Later, if HBO decides to renew, then like you said, they can obviously go in a lot of directions. McNulty's getting kicked off Daniels' major case squad. He might get sent back to boat patrol.

Season two was a different storyline yes but it was just up the ladder and still had huge ties to the 1st and 3rd seasons even if that wasn’t apparent until later in the season. There isn’t anywhere up or down to go with the crime cluster from the first three seasons. I also think Avon is going down in the season finale.

For some strange reason I think Stringer survives the hit, as you can hear him moaning in the end of the scene. I see him turning state witness and giving Rawls & Co. (and/or the feds) all the information they need.
MY Quaid
How long do you want to ignore this user?
There's no way he survives a shotgun blast and 4 or 5 pistol slugs all to the chest from 5 feet away. This show is too good to pull the Bobby Ewing soap opera crap and have him secretly put on a vest before getting shot. It makes no sense. If Stringer thought he was in danger, he would have brought more muscle with him, and would have been packing heat. He's dead. Just like Aidrianna's dead on The Soprano's.

It sounds like the writer is almost resigned to the series getting cancelled.
