Acquired Podcast has done a Seinfeld episode.

Great long format discussion on how the series came to be and it's cultural impact and financials (as all Acquired Podcasts cover).

It was a great listen. Craziest thing I learned: the theme song for each episode was different each time! The guy who wrote them would compose them to match the cadence of Jerry's standup.

I thought that was interesting as well - makes sense now, but not something that I've ever picked up.

Thanks for the recommendation. I was surprised to hear how audience tests were done at that time. They would just cold call people and ask them to tune into an unused cable channel at a specific time to watch the pilot and then gather feedback from them.

I'll check this out later.

Was (re)listening to some Norm MacDonald appearances after the Netflix doc. On one, think it was the Nerdist, he shared a theory I wasn't familiar with - that NBC wanted to lock Seinfeld up in case they gave him a talk show later when Carson retired, and the Seinfeld Chronicles were originally meant to be kind of a holding pattern until they figured that out. But then the show got good reviews and grew and audience.

Anyone seen that discussed anywhere else, or in this podcast? I'm not sure Norm had any first hand information, and assume he was sharing a story he'd heard.

I saw a small interview of Kevin Pollack, and he was talking about the time he was having lunch in Rob Reiner's trailer, and Rob said he had a great part for him in his next movie, A Few Good Men, but it had already been offered to Jason Alexander, they just had to wait to see if Seinfeld got picked up for a 2nd season which would make him unavailable, so Kevin went home and prayed for Jason's success

it was originally going to be a single 90 minute special. Then Seinfeld and Larry David wrote it as a sitcom sketch which became The Pilot.

So many props to the OP for recommending this. I listened to the first 2+ hours Saturday driving 80 miles each way. Just fantastic and fascinating.

Acquired is great. Highly recommend listening to other episodes. I particularly liked Rolex and Hermes. Trader Joe's was very good as well.

Yeah I scrolled through the list and saw a lot of early-morning walks, or as I call them, out-of-shape staggers, at least being entertained.

Better be a looong walk...most of them are 3+ hours.

I discovered Acquired a while back sitting in the waiting lobby of the mechanic and looking for something to listen to on Spotify. It's become something I look forward to every month.

I'd never heard about Acquired until it popped up on Netflix. I got about an hour into it but stopped. There was something about the one host - the one with the long hair - that was really bugging me. I think I will pick it up again but just listen while I exercise or drive and not watch.

Didn't see this posted. WSJ covered Acquired's cast. I'm about 2/3 thru the podcast. As a world class Sein-head myself, I'm hearing tidbits I never knew before - love what I'm hearing so far.

I had never heard about the Jack Welch brunch throwing everything at Jerry to get him to do a 10th season including a hand written note guaranteeing Jerry $5 million an episode ($110 million for the season). I knew they offered him a ton but didn't know it was that much. Makes sense as they were able to charge Super Bowl level advertising rates for season 9. Damn.

In the podcast they mention a book called "Top of the Rock" written by Warren Littlefield. Listening to it now. When talking about Larry David, he mentions some of the work Larry had done before and mentions a screenplay called "Prognosis Negative" which never got made. Prognosis Negative is a movie mentioned in multiple episodes as a film the gang all wants to see. Thought that was interesting/funny.

I wish there was a film fest of Seinfeld fake movies and plays.

Prognosis Negative
Checkmate
Death Blow - the Kramer favorite
Chunnel
Ponce De Leon
Rochelle, Rochelle - the movie and the play
Sack Lunch
La Cocina - George's off-off Broadway play

I'm sure I'm missing dozens more.

Which one was it that Jerry got roped into doing the pirated copy?
