October 20th, 1977. While there were many killed in the plane crash, the loss of Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines is perhaps one of the biggest losses in music history. I would love to have seen what the band could do with more time with Gaines in the lineup.

I was thinking about this the other night. I didn't realize that the drummer (can't think of his name) after surviving the crash, helping others, and then crossing a swamp looking for help, got shot by a land owner!

Artimus Pyle.

The landowner totally refutes that he shot Pyle, and there is no evidence to suggest Pyle was shot.

Edit: I don't know how I put that emoji on there.

Pyle is kind of notorious for giving different versions of the story over the years.

Pyle has always struck me as a little bit self-aggrandizing.

When I produced Street Survivors, that was Pyle's version of the story. Due to this the fans absolutely hated it. That and we had no money to work with and we only got the rights to a couple songs that weren't owned by Judy Van Zant. Judy hates Artimus Pyle. My old roommate directed it and said during one of the interview sessions Pyle showed him a scar that was supposed to be from when he was shot by Johnny Mote. Probably was BS though.

Also interesting

It was later discovered that the very same aircraft had earlier been inspected by members of Aerosmith's flight crew for possible use in their Draw the Line tour, but it was rejected because it was felt that neither the plane nor the crew were up to standard. Aerosmith's assistant chief of flight operations, Zunk Buker, told of observing pilots McCreary and Gray sharing a bottle of Jack Daniel's while he and his father inspected the plane. Aerosmith's touring family were quite shaken after receiving word of the crash, as Steven Tyler and Joe Perry had pressured their management into renting that specific plane for use on their tour
