Replace white characters with ones of color and throw it back out there. it's almost guaranteed to suck. Throw in a director (Ryan Coogler) who's recent film was accused of being anti-Christina & anti-white, and you've almost got a 99% chance of being unwatchable.

Oh no, I missed a thread whose last post was three months ago. Whatever will I do.
It still looks like it will suck.

And there's a lot of stories in the last 24 hours of Hulu picking up the series (not just interest in a pilot).

Eh, I'm not terribly worked up over this. Race was never central to Mulder or Scully's character. So long as you have the true believer/skeptic dichotomy, it doesn't really matter. Plus, Coogler has a long history of hiring minority actors in major roles, so it's not surprising.

Could be good if they stick with the heart of what made X-Files interesting. If the series as a whole becomes a meditation on race relations in America, I'll be less interested, but there's no evidence of that at present.

As long as they are new agents following in the footsteps of Mulder and Scully and a not a re-boot of the characters.

Ryan Coogler has written/directed...

- 2013 - 94% RT score - Fruitvale Station - won multiple festival awards
- 2015 - 95% RT score - Creed - resurrected/launched a popular franchise
- 2018 - 96% RT score - Black Panther - made $1.3B worldwide, was nominated for Best Picture.
- 2022 - 84% RT score - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - his only "misfire," but had to be re-written when Chadwick Boseman tragically died of cancer
- 2025 - 97% RT score - Sinners - received a historic 16 Academy Award nominations

To look at Coogler's body work and claim, sight unseen, that his take on The X-Files "is almost guaranteed to suck" and has "a 99% chance of being unwatchable" solely because it "replaces white characters" is not only insane but just really ****ing gross.

Also, it's not Coogler's fault you chose to listen to some dumbass, red-pilled commentators who think Sinners is "anti-Christian" and "anti-white," when, with only minimal research, you'll find that it's not / is much more nuanced than that. Never mind that it has white producers, a white editor, and employed literally hundreds of other white people. As to what Sinners (wrongly) being "anti-Christian" has to do with a show about aliens, I have no idea.

Here in reality, Coogler grew up loving The X-Files. He watched it with his dad every week, and show became a years-long bonding experience for the two of them. Coogler ultimately pitched his take to series creator Chris Carter, who not only gave Coogler his blessing but signed on as an executive producer. Also, it's technically a continuation, not a reboot, as Gillian Anderson has hinted heavily that she's in the pilot.

In other words, maybe try actually thinking for yourself for once, as opposed to spewing bull**** from the same, angry, cliched, fever-dream hive mind you share with another board, doing a little research of your own, and not being filled with so much hate, before posting such ****ing nonsense.

Counterpoint: race plays a major role in Coogler's oeuvre, so it's not unreasonable to presume that themes of race and racism will play a major role in his vision for the X-Files. To be fair, that's certainly not guaranteed and even if present, it's likely to be done well given Coogler's obvious talents, but I can see people not wanting the show to go down that route. Agree though that it should be given a chance.

Don't know the actress but love Sci-Fi and like Patel in everything I've watched with him although admittedly that is only Yesterday, Station Eleven and Tenet. I also didn't watch the original much because it was a time in my life when I didn't have time for TV so don't have any feeling to hurt.

So I think it could be great.

Also?

This is just straight up badass.

Imagine watching what amounts to, basically, an X-Files movie, shot on 65mm film, by the same team that won the Best Cinematography Oscar for Sinners, in theaters, starring two fantastic leads, and directed by Ryan Coogler. Then being able to go home and, a week or two later, able to pick up the story from there on TV/streaming for the next however many weeks.

I don't care who you are, that's ****ing cool.

I hear you.

But those people also have 13 SEASONS and 2 MOVIES without any potential race stuff, which no one is stopping them from enjoying. To that end, some of the squealing around this new iteration is acting as if the old iteration will cease to exist. It won't. And it's not like there was a "white" reboot in the works and a "dark skinned" reboot in the works and Disney/Hulu chose the latter. There wasn't going to be any more X-Files until Coogler approached them. So it was either his version or nothing.

And if there are themes of race and racism in his version? Like you said, if present, they're likely to be done well, considering Coogler's smarts/talents. And if certain people don't want the show to go down that route? They don't have to watch. Again, they already have their version.

If you get the leads chemistry right and have a good showrunner, it's a relatively simple show to pull off. It's not like the original series was especially deep or followed any coherent over-arching story well.

But those are 3 major pieces, and I have doubts Deadwyler/Patel and Jennifer Yale are up to the task.

Duchovny/Anderson were amazing in their roles. The only times they seemed lackluster was when the writing was failing them. Carter seemingly hasn't done much outside of the genre (or even the X-Files "world"), but he kept those two with enough story/dialogue support to thrive.

Then you had Gilligan come in and just hit episodes out of the park on the regular.

I haven't been wowed by Coogler, but he certainly has the chops. But he's not writing.

Question is do you think Jennifer Yale is up to the task, and I haven't seen enough of her work to know.

If there is one, I would say Yale is the potential weak link of the bunch for sure. Her resume is… decent. Not bad, but nothing that remotely stands out as great either. Maybe Legion?

My hope is that, beyond writing the two-hour pilot, Coogler likely outlined at least the character arcs, their histories, the broad story, etc. Because he will have no doubt set the overall tone, vibe, dynamics, initial events, etc via the pilot.

As for Deadwyler/Patel, after Coogler they're the least of my worries. Patel, especially, is one of my favorite "new" actors of the past decade or so, while Deadwyler is great in Rooster, which is what I mainly know her from. No, they almost assuredly won't come close to topping how iconic, perfectly cast, and perfectly yin and yang Mulder and Scully were. But they're both fantastic actors who seem like they'll have great chemistry together.

To be fair, Chris Carter hadn't exactly wowed anyone with his writing before X-Files.

But character arcs and the like only matter if you're doing a serious drama, and I think that is not going to serve X-Files well. Aside from Mulder looking for his sister, there wasn't a lot of weight to either Mulder or Scully's backstory.

I think if you go deep on new Mulder's personal demons and then cut to a werewolf-like creature plaguing a neighborhood... well that's a tough shift to pull off. Mulder liking sunflower seeds and porn were enough for us to "know" his character.

Likewise if Coogler wants to hit us over the head with social issues, it'll grow tiresome really quickly. El Mundo Gira (the Chupacabra episode) worked because it touched on migrant workers being invisible to everyday people... Can Coogler and Yale do that without drowning us in it?

I read the same complaints when Miles Morales was introduced to the Spiderman universe.

I'm looking forward to the Xfiles reboot; Coogler has a phenomenal track record. Plus, the show got really bad toward the end, even with Mulder and Scully

To me the key isn't how much of a fan Coogler is of the original series, its how much of a fan he is of conspiracy theories, alien theories, mythological creatures, etc.

I heard an interesting viewpoint yesterday....that the problem with so many remakes or reboots which end up being disappointing is that the new show creators are fans of the original series but not necessarily the material which inspired the original series. In other words, to create a good Star Trek reboot obviously you should enjoy and know the original series, but more importantly you should be just as big of a fan of science and space as Roddenberry was. So that you as the showrunner of the new series aren't trying to mimic the original series, rather you're trying to create the same feeling the original series had by being inspired by the same things it was inspired by.

If Coogler truly geeks out on the conspiracy theory stuff and the plots revolve around those it could be great.

Edited to simply add that I'd love to see an old fashioned serialized spooky mystery show like the original. I could do with a show that isn't solely about one big over-arching plot.

To you use your term, what's ****ing gross is how often these lazy/woke people in charge pick an established story and decide it's too white, too male, too Christian, etc.

All these cuss words in your post. You must be an angry elf. And this a case of the pot calling the kettle black. You think you're so enlightened, but your entertainment industry hive-mind approach doesn't allow you to identify so much of the trash they put out or to appreciate when a studio (ex. Angel) tries to provide quality content without all the baggage.

Maybe he'll hit it out of the park, but he's off to a bad start.

Genuinely curious, but is your "bad start" assessment solely because the leads aren't white? That's basically all we know about it, so far. If so, that says more about you than Ryan Coogler.

Speaking of Coogler, take whatever opinion you have of his talent, his writing, his vision, his race, his whatever, the guy is a proven financial hit. You know, what studios and television execs are trying to do; run a business, maximize shareholder value, and whatnot? The guy can pitch a reimaging of Manos: The Hands of Fate and studios would greenlight it almost immediately.
