Filming began this week on Miami Vice '85, from director Joseph Kosinski (F1, Top Gun: Maverick, Oblivion, Tron Legacy) and writer Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler), drawing inspiration of course from the original 1984-90 NBC series, specifically its pilot episode, Brother's Keeper, while other season one plot points + original elements are being utilized as well.

With the start of filming comes our first official (and unofficial) looks at the movie below.

So far, what I love about this iteration, besides Kosinski directing and the incredible cast, is that it's not going to be cheesy/goofy retro '80s. Rather, with Kosinski at the helm, it's going to be ultra-authentic, sleek as hell, and the vibes are going to be immaculate. Even the set pics ooze '80s cool. Yes, it admittedly feels a bit excessive considering the show and 2006 movie already exist. Still, I can't help but get caught up in the way Kosinski is going to bring this world to life - again, especially with this cast.

Miami Vice '85 hits theaters May 19, 2028 and, personally, I can't wait.

I can't tell if it's essential or lame, creatively speaking, for the movie's third act to feature Phil Collin's "In the Air Tonight" in roughly the same way the pilot does. On one hand it *is* Miami Vice, and the audience would lose their **** the second that beat drops. But is it also *so* iconic that straight up copying it would ultimately feel like a derivative facsimile? I honestly don't knowโ€ฆ

This had better include a Don Johnson cameo in the manner that Lee Majors appears in the "Fall Guy" movie.

Or better yet, a Don Johnson AND Phillip Michael Thomas cameo with a brief echo of the original score. Kinda like in "Maverick" when Mel Gibson is in the bank that a masked Danny Glover is robbing.

Man I am super ready for this...kind of wish John Leguizamo was not in it but will definitely see it regardless....don't care what the Rotten Tomatoes score is. Also, I know I am in the minority, and that it had some really cheesymoments, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Michael Mann one. People are kidding themselves if they say the original wasn't pretty cheesy at times.

I liked the mIchael Mann one too, and I think it has aged well.

I love this approach.

I'm guessing Tubbs follows a case of his from New York to Miami, then ultimately ends up staying.

That said, I've never seen the pilot, so maybe that's how it originally went...

I did, but he hasn't starred in a movie or series since August 2025. That's 14 months ago, and he won't be starring in anything else for the rest of the year. So he'll essentially have taken off more well over a year and a half, which seems like more than long enough to be out of the spotlight. Granted, he has two to four movies lined up for next year, and then another two or three coming in 2028. So he'll be on everyone's radar again quite a bit before Miami Vice '85 releases. But right now? I feel like he did the right thing and took a beat to chill.

That tweet is pretty funny.

It's exactly the plot of the pilot. Tubbs follows leads to Miami from New York on a case and ends up working on the case with Crockett.
