Our eldest seems to be into older movies. We've watched Seven Year Itch and All About Eve. I know…back to back MM movies. I don't really care for MM as an actress and I don't think she's anything special from a Hollywood starlet perspective.

I thought Seven Year Itch was pretty good and funny. I cannot understand the hype over All About Eve unless it was the first movie to present the trope of the understudy.

What else yall got?

"It's a Wonderful Life" might be one of the greatest films of all time

"Sergeant York" is another good one with a great message.

"The Great Escape" is solid too. But prob more geared for male audience.

Somewhat off the beaten path, but an award winner, I really enjoyed Marty with Ernest Borgnine.

I think it counts as an old movie, but It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

And the Pink Panther movies.

The Sting is a masterpiece. Hard to imagine that a movie only a few years older than Jaws is an "old movie", but it's over 50 years old now.

I never get tired of the original The Magnificent Seven. Honestly, it's an easier rewatch than The Seven Samurai.

Casablanca still has like the tightest screenplay ever IMO. Not a single line wasted. Air tight. Infinitely rewatchable. 12 Angry Men is the only other legit challenger in terms of script and that's already been mentioned. Two literally perfect movies. Zero bloat.

For extra credit in history last year, my son had to watch a movie that was filmed during WWII. I told him to watch Casablanca, and he was not happy about it. He was convinced it was a sappy love story, but since there aren't many choices from that time, he agreed to watch it. As soon as the movie was done, he turned to me and said, "Damn it. That was really friggin' good."

In a lot of ways, the special effects in Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin movies amaze me even more than movies today. Today, they would just CGI everything, but that wasn't an option back then. Seeing what you can do with forced perspective, a little math, and straight up ingenuity is incredible.

Two just mentioned The Maltese Falcon. It frequently gets mentioned in lists like this, so I watched it once when I had nothing pressing to do. I don't get it. Really? It's slow. Meandering plot. Dead-pan deliveries. No great climax to speak of. No great resolution of tension. I can't think of a single thing mentionable about watching this thing. Guys, please help me out. What did I miss?

As my entry, I would add The Graduate". Is that old enough for this list? Too risqu for young audiences?
