'Lonesome Dove' Series From 'East of Eden' Showrunners a Go at Netflix

The streamer has given a straight-to-series order for a new adaptation of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. The drama comes from Teton Ridge Entertainment which owns the rights to McMurtry's book and its follow-up novels and co-showrunners Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart. Kazan and Stuart recently wrapped Netflix's East of Eden limited series, based on John Steinbeck's novel.

Can't wait to see it redone for the "modern audience".

But yeah, Netflix is trash. Would prefer HBO but even they could easily screw this up.

That said. This show does not need to be remade.

Lonesome Dove is the absolute GOAT of book to show adaptations. Every character, actor, scene and conversation was perfectly done. I've never seen a book made into a show that did a better job keeping true to the source material in every way and yet also transcending it due to the genius of the casting. There is no need, ever, for a redo.

No Country for Old Men, is a pretty incredible adaptation, but that was a movie and not a series or show.

AI spit out Josh Brolin for Woodrow, and for Gus one of McConaughey (yuck), Sam Rockwell, Jeff Bridges, or Woody Harrelson. Not sure any of them truly had what it takes.

I agree with this. The miniseries did it justice but the book is still better.

That's a completely fair point and you're correct that the novel is a masterpiece. I didn't really mean transcend as in surpass, more so that it was like the ultimate distillation of the novel (if that makes any sense). The characters onscreen are just a perfect reflection of the characters we already met and imagined in the book.

I've never read the book. I did listen to the audio book narrated by Lee Horsley and I thought he did an amazing job but I feel like he tried to emulate Duvall and Jones and did a great job for just an audio version.

I read a lot of negative reviews of Lee Horsley's narration but I think if you liked the miniseries you'd appreciate his take on it. And I think watching the series as a young child and listening to the audio book as an adult was a great way to appreciate the story.

No one can replace them but I could see a Pitt/Olyphant; Call/Gus giving it a decent run possibly.
