Dumbledore gets my greatest scrutiny. Maybe Richard Harris would have delivered over time, and I liked his portrayal better than Gambon's...

But neither seemed to nail the unflappable and joyful nature of Dumbledore as portrayed in the book. As Rowling has acknowledged, the story parallels Christ and the crucifixion/resurrection. Dumbledore is the "God the Father" aspect of the Trinity and as such, always seems to have a plan or at minimum remains unfazed by those against him or his knowledge in the books.

If Lithgow can add those joyful and calm adjectives to his portrayal, it will go a long way for me.

Lithgow was when I knew we were in good hands. He is a comedian who can turn on the drama at the flip of the switch. He can be the beguiling politician that Dumbledore is, and i have seen him act in Dexter that makes me believe Voldemort was afraid of Dumbledore

Still no Peeves in the trailer. Won't be good.

I enjoyed the movies, but they weren't great as far as adaptations go. I'm super stoked for this

I have no qualms with black Snape; based on the few glimpses we get in the trailer he seems to be nailing it. But man, Adam Driver would have killed in that part.

I love Rickman. But he anchored the original cast as much older than they need to be. Him and the rest of the marauders and Harry's parents (40s) all were in their 50s

Like Petunia in this is in her early 30s and it is noticeably different

Forget the Black Snape meltdowns (for now), an interesting thought I heard in a reaction video today was how there are a couple of scenes in the trailer indicating the show will, at times, be told from perspectives other than Harry. The movies were told almost exclusively from his perspective (if I remember correctly), but in this trailer we see Ron getting his invitation to Hogwarts in the mail well before he meets Harry, and we see Hermione on the train before she meets Harry and Ron. It'll be interesting to see if that shifts the tone of the story.

I was also excited to see that. But I'm one who thinks the actual character of Harry Potter kind of sucks, most of the time. The side characters were always so much more interesting.

I like Harry, but get what you're saying. When I started reading the books to my son, I kept having to stop and talk about how Harry's decisions weren't always the best and he should have asked an adult for help more often.

I particularly can't stand him in book 5, although I think JK was really going for the know it all teenager trope.

(I suppose I should cut him some slack since he didn't really have positive home influence)

The place where the movies really let me down - other than ignoring massive pieces of plot and key scenes - is that they never let Harry be a kid. A huge part of getting out of his terrible situation is the friendships, which are not just born out of shared traumatic experiences. Him riding Buckbeak for the first time and him and Ron wrestling for the Half-Blood Prince potions book are 2 very rare scenes where you see him acting how a kid would instead of just being an actor reading lines.

There really are just thousands of opportunities across 7 books to make the series very impressive. I hope they do a great job.
