She's causing a reaction/stir, which is exactly the point. Everyone's talking about it, and thus more eyes are now on the movie as well. Also, for what it's worth, I'm seeing mostly positive reactions to this look, though mainly from women. It's not really meant for middle-aged dudes on messages boards.

I don't know about all of that and never saw the grumpy face memes until now.

What I do know is I've never even been moved much less impressed by any role I saw her in. What does she add exactly? Never walked away from any movie saying, wow she was amazing.

And while I think she is generally attractive I don't get those calling her the most beautiful woman. She's pretty I guess and above average. Not my type I guess.

Much more impressed by Florence Pugh personally and only mildly attracted to her as well.

I think she adds a lot to the Spider-Man movies. Also have you seen The Drama? Or Challengers?

She also adds a lot to a very limited role in Dune, and I think is under-appreciated in Dune Part 2.

These are just my opinions of course, but thats why I don't really understand the hate. She definitely isn't detrimental to any project she's been in, IMHO.

My guess on Zendaya's casting success is that maybe she has cultivated a strong network in the industry, must be a hard worker, and also easy for directors and other cast members to work with. And those are all great qualities for an actor, no disrespect intended towards her skill.

She's popular in real life and has a huge social media following (177 million instagram followers, and yes, studios look at how big of an online presence and following stars have), plus she doesn't do or say anything controversial, and does come across as a likeable person. It also seems like she's fallen into that scenario where she's the popular star amongst casting agents because she's now getting cast in a bunch of big name movies, and at the same time she's getting cast in big name movies because she's popular. Its a cycle of casting and popularity that just feeds off itself and end up inflating her status.

I don't really want to be on the defending Zendaya train. I think she's a good actress and brings stuff to the movies she is in, and I don't get the hate, but she isn't like my favorite actress of that generation or anything. BUT this take is just wrong.

She isn't now getting cast in a bunch of big name movies. The Odyssey is the only big name movie she recently has been cast in out of the blue, and that happened 2 years ago and is a VERY small part and probably only happened because Tom Holland got cast (putting that together from their stories of the casting process). I mean I guess you could say her being in Shrek 5 is that as well, but thats just voice work. She's been MJ in Spider-man for 10 years. She got cast as Chani in Dune in like 2019.

Otherwise, she has been using her clout to make smaller movies, like Challengers or The Drama or the Ronnie Spektor biopic she is making with Berry Jenkins. Her career is actually what you want from a movie star like her. She shows up in big movies and serves them, and then makes small interesting movies too.

I didn't say she's only getting cast in big blockbusters. She obviously does smaller movies like The Drama too, and from what I saw she got reviews from that.

But nothing I said is wrong, sorry.

She's super popular, doesn't do anything controversial, is likeable in her interviews, and is attractive. All of which contribute to her getting considered (and likely in some cases cast) for roles.

She's also super inflated in Hollywood right now. And that is not unusual, its happened for decades. Someone becomes the hot commodity and therefore gets considered for more roles because of that. And consequently being seen in more roles increases their popularity.

None of that is wrong, nor derogatory towards Zendata or her talent.

She's not traditionally beautiful, so there's always a lot of blowback from some parts of society.

Other people dislike her because she goes by one name.

Other people don't like here because she's a Disney kid who followed the traditional 2000s arc of goofy kids show, then Dancing with the Stars, then a music album

Others because she doesn't "look like" the traditional MJ from Spiderman.


I think all of those opinions are idiotic.
I saw her in The Greatest Showman before I saw her in the first Spiderman. She was a scene-stealer, which is really saying something in a movie with Zac Efron and Wolverine both singing.

She does play a fairly similar type of character in Dune and Spider-man (I haven't seen the 4th one yet, please don't spoil it) in terms of being quiet, stoic, and reticent to show her emotions.

I think as big a star as she is, she's really just scratching the surface and could flip the script and go back to music, put out an album, and become J-Lo 2.0 in terms of influence and multiple-platform success.

My point is she was cast in these movies or franchises years ago. So it has nothing to do with her public persona right now. And she isn't being cast in a bunch of stuff right now. She has Shrek 5 on the docket and then an indie by Berry Jenkins. You could argue that the Odyssey is playing on her star power because it was after Dune and Spider-Man NWH, but you could also argue that Nolan saw her in those movies and cast her because he liked what he saw. Especially because he doesn't really follow the celebrity hype anyway.

I'm just trying to understand what movies she is being cast in or considered for that you are referring to.

I highly doubt Nolan had seen Spidey or Dune (the recent ones) before she was cast.

More likely, it was a bargain deal, as it was known she'd be hanging around on set with Holland with nothing to do anyway.
