Do theaters care at all about under 17 getting in anymore? I remember as a kid, every now and then the person in the ticket booth asking for id, but usually not.

My 15 year old and some friends want to go see The Odyssey tomorrow. They can handle it and we are good with it, but I don't want them to get there and be turned away. I assume they will have no issue.

That's a good question. We did have an over-eager young theater employee recently say "you can't bring outside drinks into the theater" and we went "ok" and did it anyway. So you might get one of those types. Curious what others know though.

The theater I went to literally had a sign saying they will card for R rated movies. You can try, but I would bet they won't let them in. I know when I was in high school, my dad tried dropping my brother and me off at the theater to watch the Matrix Reloaded. They wouldn't even let him buy us the tickets, hand them to us, and let us walk in.

We hadn't seen any R-rated films with our kids until this year with Backrooms and The Odyssey. With anything like this it'll likely depend on the employee if your teenagers are there by themselves.

If the teenagers are anywhere from 12/13-16 and are respectful and behaving themselves, then likely I'd expect most employees wouldn't care. If they look too young more likely they'll say something but not a guarantee. If you get a Karen or a Chad then good luck but I wouldn't expect that too often.

When we've bought tickets online I was SHOCKED at the requirements for the absolute minimum age, which was 6. It was either under 6 or 6 and under...either way that was the limit for the theater even with parents present....who brings their 6 year old to R rated films?

Honestly it seems like theaters are enforcing the age restrictions for R rated movies more these days than they did when I was a kid in the 90s and early 2000s.

Interesting. I would have thought the opposite. The theater we most often go to doesn't even check tickets out front. It's one of the ones with a waiter (just closest to our house) and they are usually just asking if they can get you anything.

I would expect the menu/restaurant style theaters would create less a problem…

They're already in their seats they just show the QR code or ticket order since they were likely purchased online.
Server knows they're getting a built in 18% tip on whatever they order and they've got other customers to help.

Less likely they make a stink about it…

My question is why was the Odyssey rated R? It wasn't scary, it wasn't gory, it wasn't that intense. No nudity and no sex. I think there were a couple of F-bombs. Is that the threshold now?

I think my wife had a big water bottle. She may have had soda and snacks in her purse. I can't remember.

When I worked at a movie theater we only enforced age restrictions for NC-17 movies, and for R rated movies with unattended children/teens that didn't know how to behave appropriately.

My daughter's friend got denied entry into The Odyssey last week. They've gone to plenty of R rated movies and never had an issue.

Strange to me they are putting the hammer down on one with just violence. IMO Obsession is much worse.

I have a fond memory of going to see the South Park movie, the lights coming on, and about 80% of the attendees, all teenage boys, getting kicked out after the previews.

I worked at the AMC 30 at Grapevine Mills the summer after high school. We had a policy which allowed people to bring food in, so I always found it hilarious when I saw people try sneaking food into the theater.

Neither of my kids were ever that interested in going to the movies, so this really never came up in my house. But when I was a kid, yep, I was always trying to get into R-rated movies. I was successful a bunch of times, most notably by getting into The Thing in 1982 despite the old lady who owned the old Lake Theater in Lake Jackson. A year earlier I bought a ticket to Caveman at the old Plitt Theater in Lake Jackson, walked straight toward that auditorium, then at the last second juked to the left and went into the auditorium showing Friday the 13th Part II. Got caught coming out when the movie was over, but hey, I saw the movie I wanted to see.

The one time I ever snuck in was to see Once Upon a Time in Mexico. My cousin told me to find something with a similar show time and buy that ticket instead. I went up to the counter and said "Hi… uh………… one for Seabiscuit.."

Very tangental, but this reminds me of being at Walmart a while back and this maybe 5 foot tall soft spoken girl who looked like she was about 18 was at the door checking receipts.

We had stopped to let her look at ours. As she was checking it someone walked right past her, and she gently calls out, "Oh no, you need to...ugh...they never listen to me."

When the family goes to the movies my wife always stops at the store to buy an inordinate amount of candy and makes me smuggle it all in, so my shorts are always bulging at the pockets while I walk with my hands around the waist to keep them from falling to my ankles, every step making a massive rattling sound so that everyone knows exactly what is going on. It's really genius level stuff.
