Great teaser trailer for Mike Flanagan's next.

Then after this? He's currently filming an Exorcist movie starring Scarlett Johansson.

Dude is tackling all the '70s horror hits...

Sosososososo in on this. His run w the Netflix minis he did and then took the 3 or 4 year hiatus... was frankly kind of pissed. But he told a well organized spooky story and I took the cadence of his output for granted. Whether or not they were critically appreciated, dgaf- liked the guys shows and glad he's back! Looking forward to his take on this one!

I wish he'd go back to doing another original series. (Or very loose adaptation like the Haunting shows)

Midnight Mass was so good.

All I needed to hear was Mike Flanagan. Anything he does, I'm there day one.

Midnight Mass is the only horror show I have been able to get my wife interested in. It is a fantastic, thought provoking show that leads to some great conversations.

I agree with the sentiment of wanting him to do something original. He does not entirely fit in with this, but there is a trend of horror directors having a hit and turning that into a cash grab deal to make something based on a recognizable IP. Curry Barker is doing this with Texas Chainsaw Massacre after being successful with Obsession. I am surprised that Kane Parsons is not doing it after Backrooms. Instead, he went right to work on a Backrooms sequel.

I always considered this a "good for the mid 1970s but doesn't really hold up" story. Maybe if the story was significantly changed, a series could be okay. But in general, if someone pitched a "this girl gets bullied but then discovers she has telekinesis and uses it to get to get revenge" story these days, it would be considered a pretty lame idea.

On ep 4 now and blown away by how good this is so far. Great cast with some really good performances. The show doesn't stick 100% to the novel or film adaptation and has teased a plot twist from the source material. The wife and I are sitting in bed with the flu and just tore through 4 episodes. Good stuff!

Awesome to hear. Will start it soon.

Also, just to set expectations, I heard Flanagan say he envisions it as a three-season series. So I wouldn't expect everything to be wrapped up by episode eight.

I can see that being the case. There is a slow moving subplot that will likely take the story much further than the confines of the SK novel. Most of the story so far is focused on Carrie's story similar to the movie but he is breadcrumbing what looks like a much wider story.

Saw speculation that he took this on so he could start "world building" in advance of the Dark Tower series. Since there are so many tie-ins from other SK books to Dark Tower, including Carrie.

Small derail - how did Carrie the book tie into the DT books? I've read all of SK's books and don't remember any cross-references to Carrie the book specifically.

Speaking of Carrie, my parents used to live just up the street from Sissy Spacek when Sissy was in high school.

Small world.

Just watched episode 1. Read the book a long time ago. The plot is fairly predictable so far, but so what? The story is good. The casting is good. The acting is very good, especially Samantha Sloyan who plays Carrie's mom.

I thought it could've been a great modern adaptation if not for the stupid DT world building elements which ended up overpowering the series to the point that it no longer felt like a Carrie adaptation by the end. That finale ruined the series for me. They decided to make Carrie a perfect victim rather than someone with their own agency for the terrible things she did. It seems to follow similar issues we've witnessed with female protagonists over the last 10 years where it appears that they cannot have major flaws.

I also think I've come to the point with new Flanagan media that I'm just going to wait and see what the consensus is before diving in. His monologues, stilted dialogue, and overly schmaltzy writing is tough to ignore and grating over 8 hours of watching.

4 episodes in, and this has been really good. Great modern take, world-building, and a great Mike Flagan touch. The acting is great, with good iterations of the original characters. The high school kids, mom, faculty, etc.

I really enjoy Mike Flanagan and his work, and this is very true to his style. If you like his previous work, you'll like this.

I never read the book, but did watch the original movie back in the day. With Sissy Spacek. (Never saw the remake)

The mother in the Mike Flanagan series is definitely much more nuanced than the mother in the OG movie. The mother in OG Carrie was just an all-around awful person. MF's mother in the show, while still being a pretty terrible mom, has some redeeming qualities in that she seems to actually care about her daughter. I'm only 5 episodes in so maybe she changes and shows her true colors later, I dunno.

Sounds like the same thing they did in East of Eden, which while a great series did seem to deviate from the book in a similar way. Hollywood gonna Hollywood.

I agree that he took some interesting liberties with this adaptation, but overall, I really enjoyed it. Acting, casting, cinematography- all phenomenal.
