I can not recommend this hilarious documentary enough.

Two hockey bros set out to do a big year birdwatching out of nowhere, living in a kia Sedona for the whole thing. They know nothing about it at first and interview some of the top bird watchers in the country in the doc. It is absolutely hilarious and if you like birds at all there are a ton of awesome birds in it. The main guy comes away being able to instantly ID birds by sound and essentially falls in love with birdwatching. Very much worth the watch.

As a person who has 0 interest in birds I was hesitant to watch this documentary after a friend recommended it, but I'm really glad I did. It really is amazing and in the last 9 months I've watched it multiple times with friends and family (some who have as much interest as I do and some who are totally into birds). Everyone who watches it really enjoys it. The dudes are hilarious and you really start to cheer them on as their count of birds keeps going up.

Do yourself a favor and give it 10-15 minutes and see if you find it interesting...I'm willing to bet you will.

This sh** is a thing. I have a pretty amazingly diverse bird population on my ranch. The year round creek (actually wider than the Colorado River in most places) that comes thru the north end is a big reason why. I certainly appreciate the bird population like I do all wildlife. But...............I had a guy hook me up with some "birders" and they pay legit money to basically sit in blinds or elevated platforms and bird watch all day.

Yes, they are "bros" but the one brother is a wildlife documentarian/videographer who was between jobs when they decided to do this. There's a reason it was well done. He knew what he was doing.

That said, its outstanding.

I was in Tahoe last week for the 4th of July weekend hiking and downloaded the Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab and it was surprisingly fun to walk around with my kids trying to listen to the birds and then find them by their call. I dont really care much about birds, but it was kind of like playing Pokemon Go with my kids.

I'll watch tonight.
I attended Reagan's inauguration in 1981 and have voted republican since. The republicans have shot themselves in the foot this go-round.

A guy on Twitter made am e ink display that's hooked up to the app and has a microphone outside his window and it displays the image of every bird it hears on the framed e ink display. It's super cool and I really want to make one.

I feel compelled to recommend:

Big Year, a smallish film with Jack Black, Steve Martin, and Owen Wilson


Rare Birds, an even smaller film with William Hurt and a very fetching Molly Parker. The rare bird is fake; this is mostly a Canadian comedy with eccentric characters such as one might find in a certain type of Irish movie.

The older I get, the more I understand birding.

I'm 15 minutes in and this documentary is nuts.

Way more entertaining than anything put out for the masses on a trillion dollar budget.

My wife loves birds and I pulled it up on youtube on our TV for her, thinking I would cut out 10-15 min in, and let her watch

I watched the entire thing and shared the link w 10 already.

Question - those nice, crisp photos/videos that showed the birds with notation of what species they were at the bottom - did the guys take those photos/videos themselves?
