Hayes Carll has a few...

You Get It All

And I'd rather drive you crazy, being more than you can stand
Than to let you try to love half a man
And all my cards are on the table, and darlin', it's your call
But I'm all in, so lose or win, you get it all

All my blessin', all my curse
All my better, all my worse
From the chapel to the hearse, you get it all
Yeah, you do

I was pretty young when i first heard Marty Robbins singing Streets of Laredo. Made me re-think my plan of being a rough and tumble cowboy.

May I introduce you to one James McMurtry.

Choctaw Bingo...a raucous PWT family reunion set in eastern Oklahoma and more
Lights of Cheyenne...horrible marriage that stays together because of inertia
Just Us Kids...getting older in 3 verses. At nearly 50, I'm moving into verse 3.
Canola Fields...long term on again off again affair
Levelland...Robert Earl made it famous, but James wrote it
Ruby and Carlos...one of the most devastating songs ever
No More Buffalo...life of the road as a gig musician

And that doesn't even touch his political songs...

Larry's son. Thought about adding him too but seems to be stretching a little too much to label him country.

Ray Wylie Hubbard wrote Choctaw Bingo but most people recognize the McMurtry version as the better of the two. Myself included.

Lights of Cheyenne is probably my favorite from him. So somber and depressing!

"The Man Comes Around" - Johnny Cash. You don't hear too many (any?) songs about the Book of Revelations

"I'm no Stranger to the Rain" - Keith Whitley. As if he had decided he was going to drink himself to death, and wrote about it beforehand

Sorry to be that guy, but there is no "s" on the Book of Revelation.

My song would be Good Lord Lorrie by the Turnpike Troubadours

Heard this song today and immediately thought of this thread.

Beautiful and moving.

aSGtE is one of my favorite albums. Use of funk elements and string arrangement is so good.

In case you weren't away, ol' Sturgill's band, Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds, has an album coming out next month. Allegedly a physical release only.

Isn't it going to be a disco album?

They didn't write it, but its a great cover. Not exactly country, but its better than anything Trashville puts out.

One Horse Town by Blackberry Smoke, and Ruby's Two Sad Daughters as sung by Pat Green (written by Walt Wilkins).

We lived on 20 acres between Big Spring and Forsan (went to Elbow Elementary School in Forsan ISD) until I was 10, and these songs reminds me so much of that area.

"Ruby's" in particular reminds me of some neighbors we had out there. They had two teenage daughters who would babysit me occasionally. The parents split, and both of those girls went haywire, and even came to live with us for a little bit. It was a messed-up situation.

You never know with him.

I saw him at Red Rocks in September, best concert I've ever seen, and he played all genres of music. It was amazing and I stood in the rain for hours. I "might" have a link to the live version from both shows if anyone was interested.

If you consider Sturgill Simpson country, I'd go with Panbowl and Just Let Go. Those are pretty dang deep. I think Amarillo by Morning is simple lyrically, but also deep.

If you don't know what you're doing, do it quickly.

Oil Man by Chad Cooke Band hits me hard every time. The lie the singer tells himself "I did it all for them" I've said too many times building a career. For me it wasn't oil, it was silicon, but this song has always been a wake up call and reminder. Man I missed a lot chasing crap. Hey, my baby girl turns 18 today, leave me alone.
