Really funny video announcing a tour of the 1986 film on its 40th anniversary. And look what they finally made into a toy. Where was my Matrix of Leadership in 1986, you idiots!

40 years. When this came out, It's a Wonderful Life was 40 years old.

Damn dude… spoilers.

Optimus's death never traumatized me as a kid despite seeing it 100 times. My parents told me they rebuilt him later, I guess. Now… revisiting it in high school and seeing magma come out of Prowl's mouth when he gets shot in the chest? That was pretty brutal.

Killing him is what it special and impactful. That movie is awesome.

He was the voice of Rodimus if I recall correctly.

Hot Rod was cool but I hear Rodimus sucked. Which is a shame, because him hearing Optimus' voice as he opens the matrix is one of the best parts of the film.

Still amazing they got Orson Welles to play a transforming robot for his last role before death.

He wasn't just a robot. He was a planet eating machine which befits his stature.

The first season of the Transformers cartoon had 16 episodes.
The second season had 49.

There are zero deaths in those 65 episodes.

In the first 30 minutes of the movie, you have the deaths of:

Brawn
Prowl
Ratchet
Ironhide - Damnit Prime, let me at those Decepti-creeps!
Wheeljack
Windcharger
Optimus Prime

Skywarp
Thundercracker
All of the Insecticons (very cool toys)
Megatron
Starscream

Any kid under 10 was scarred for life watching that first battle before they even killed Optimus.
Brawn, Prowl, Ratchet (worthless), and Ironhide all die within 30 seconds of each other. It would be like making a movie of the Superfriends cartoon, then killing Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman in the first scene.

Had to make room for the new line of toys.

Brawn, Ratchet, Ironhide and Wheeljack were pretty much in every episode too. Prowl and Bluestreak are pretty interchangeable but these were top cast members.

Allegedly the reaction to Prime's death is why Duke didn't die in the GI Joe movie.

Yup, they had to re-edit the movie so he lived.

Cobra Commander is the same voice as Starscream and there was an episode where CC was in a Transformers cartoon.

But I expect real fans to already know that.

The original Transformers cartoon makes me laugh as it was very obvious it was done on the cheap. One episode, maybe the first, had two Starscreams standing next to each other. Another had Starscream's voice coming out of another Transformer. I know the animation was done by a Japanese studio, but it must have been a bunch on interns.

Depends on how you look at it. A cheap cartoon or an expensive toy commercial.

There are several episodes when the same Autobots that are on a mission are also standing in front of Teletran One back at the base.
THat happened a ton in Superfriends as well.

Bruce if you haven't seen this, you'll love it.

Galvatron in the crowd cheering as the Decepticons are trying to rescue him from inside a lava pit takes the cake.

Wow, what a trailer. The 4K looks amazing too.

I was five when it came out, saw it in the theater, and it's the first movie I ever remember just completely ****ing me up.

But man it was so good, so epic, and changed everything about the animated series going forward.

Super curious to see what the tease is for.

I was 12 when it came out and had stopped playing with toys so even though I wanted to, I didn't go see it because my brother was constantly mocking me about it.

Then that mother****er went and saw it. He was 15.

Revisiting this thread after Peter Cullen's death - the tease of a "new chapter" at the end of the re-released film means that Cullen likely recorded some audio for Prime's return which is probably his last role ever.

We're not quite done with Cullen as Prime yet.

incredible news about the 40th anniversary showing. Need to start prepping my kids for the fact that I'm going to cry during a movie that mostly came out 40 years ago about giant robots.

A new 12-minute animated short called "Prime Awakening" at the end featuring Peter Cullen and Frank Welker's work together. The animation is being done by the same studio that did "Predator: Killer of Killers"

Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment announced Tuesday that Optimus Prime: Awakening is a new "fully realized, 12-minute animated short designed as a love letter to the Transformers community and the late Peter Cullen." Optimus Prime: Awakening will be attached to select screenings of the 4K release of The Transformers: The Movie, which is returning to theaters in 4K from Sept. 17-22. The animated short promises "emotional storytelling [and] electric action" with new performances by Frank Welker (Megatron and Soundwave) and Peter Cullen in his final original voice performance as Optimus Prime.

"Optimus Prime and Megatron were made for each other," Welker said in a statement. "After all, one needs the perfect hero against the epitome of evil to create great drama. Peter's portrayal of Prime was born of his own personal beliefs; honesty, loyalty, and always insisting on doing the right thing. This made it easy to be friends. Returning as Megatron and Soundwave for one final story opposite Peter's Optimus in 'Optimus Prime: Awakening' was a real gift. I will miss my friend, but that voice and his heart and values will always be part of Optimus Prime."

Back in theaters Sept. 17-22.
