Lol- tonight's showing. In a county Trump quite easily won (and I voted for.)

That's right, all seats available.

Kayleigh, there was no "standing room only". Nor would it be allowed.

You guys need to get together at a private screening of "Melania" and work out your differences.

I can't imagine myself ever being excited to see a movie about the wife of a politician I liked.

I feel like Jackie Kennedy is the exception here.

It's crossed the $8 million mark now. Looking forward to this weekend there are only two releases that really seem to jump out., Strangers 3 and Solo Mio. (I'm not sure if the super bowl will affect it all that much)

It will be interesting to see how it does in it's second weekend. I think the average second week drop off is something like 40%-50% (Katy Perry's 2012 film saw a 46% drop). So I think a decent barometer would be anywhere from $3.5M to $4.25M.

Heard from my aunt that this is actually really, really good. Will still probably wait until it is streaming, as it pretty much takes a guaranteed banger to get me to go to the movies.

I saw it on Sunday afternoon.

EDIT: It's a movie that would have made vague sense in 2016 when she and Trump were the outsiders in DC. she was a wholly unique first lady back then, completely. I can't think of any woman who would have found that transition more bizarre dating back to the 1910s when Woodrow Wilson married a woman while he was already president.

Honestly, it could have been interesting. Make it about Election Night 2016, which really was historic, or make it about COVID times in the White House, or make it about the 24 hours before and after Trump was almost assassinated.

But this? It's like having a really rich socialite decide she needs a documentary about a big party she's having. It's something that Kris Jenner would do. I kept thinking of the socialite girl in "The Good Place' throughout it. Maybe this plays in countries like England where there is a section of the population always slobbering over what the royals are up to, but I'm still not sure what the point of the film was.

My grandmother has been dead for 18 years, but watching it, I could imagine her saying, "If you need to tell people how glamorous you are, you're not glamorous."

Ok second weekend numbers are in!

Melania came in 10th and made $2.3 million for the weekend bringing the total gross to $13.3 million

That represents a 66.7% drop between the first and second weekend even though it appeared in an additional 225 screens. That does not seem to bode well for making back the roughly $75 million to make and promote the movie.

But anything is possible I suppose.

Went to see it this weekend with my wife. I like Melania and voted for Trump three times despite his grating personality. More like a pretty boring episode of the old series Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. I do not recommend.

Why would Amazon pay Melania's production company $40 million for the movie rights, and another $35 million to promote it when it's highly unlikely to claw back anywhere close to $75 million in revenue? Hmmmm.

For reference, no documentary that I'm aware of has ever spent $35 million on promotion. The entire production of the documentary, Earth cost $47 million, but made $109 million at the box office.

Melania is within $54,000 of passing Blues Brothers 2000 for #4,801 on the all-time domestic box office list.

I saw Blues Brothers 2000 at the dollar movie. I found a dime on the floor on the way out and was relieved I wasn't out a whole dollar.

Movies that Melania surpassed at the box office on Wednesday:

Baby; Secret of the Lost Legend
Child's Play 3
Grease 2
Supergirl
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever

It is $4,000 from catching Friday the 13th Part VII: Jason Takes Manhattan

Melania is up to $14.546 million through yesterday. It has surpassed two cultural icons in the zeitgeist of late 1980s film.

1989's Kickboxer, in which Van Damme avenges his brother, Keith Hernandez

and 1987's Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, featuring a fight that I think they filmed in my backyard at night.

20+ years later and that movie title is still as stupid now as it was then.

Why would they be?

Gone With The Wind is the all-time leader in numbers of tickets sold which were probably 25 cents or less, but people go BSC because Avatar crossed a billion dollars.

Why would we adjust for inflation in this case?

Because we are talking about dollars, not tickets sold.

Ok.

Next time someone posts about the dollar amount a new blockbuster made, be sure to adjust GWTW for inflation so people can see whether this latest blockbuster is really all that.

Dollar amount has always been a stupid comparison.

Avatar Fire and Ice isn't better than Star Wars. But here we are.

I'm certainly willing to go by ticket sales numbers as a comparison metric. I don't think we usually have that.

Just so there's no confusion, all of my box office posts are meant to be jokes. I don't care about inflation, comparisons, or anything else to do with how much money this movie makes.

Melania storms up to #4,687 on Friday with $14,770,071 total.

It passed 1977's Orca, which was Jaws with a killer whale battling the first guy that played Dumbledore. There is a 21-year-old Bo Derek in it, however.

Also on Melania's Friday kill list: The Sixth Man, 1997s tour de force starring Marlon Wayans and Dwayne Wayne from A Different World. Dwayne has a heart attack while playing college basketball, probably because Kadeem Hardison was 32 in 1997, and appears to his brother as a ghost for the rest of the movie.

I unironically love the 6th Man
