While I have come to appreciate the over the top satire Verhoeven film, I would like to see a film more in the spirt of the Heinlein novel. More Marines in space, less Nazis in space.

Sadly that's what we want, but I see Hollywood leaning even more into the Nazis in space given todays climate

IDK, that zeitgeist may be coming to an end in Hollywood. Money is a a big motivator and being too preachy has damaged many franchises. Still I won't hold my breath, those who love the film probably never read the book so I will expect we'll still see campiness even if they choose to tone down the whole fascism angle.

Agreed on this and the preceeding post 100%. If you read that article they mention they would probably take it the blockbuster route which imo would further support your theory imo.

Meh, this thing is a classic because of how over the top it is. I say lean in and don't try to make it like every other sci-fi alien shooting movie that has been released recently.

More nazis in space. More ridiculous "I'm doing my part" ads.

In. One of my favorite books and one I re-read every 2-3 years. Hoping this one is more true to the spirit of the book -- Nationalism, love of country, selfless service, and aliens in space.

Fascism IS predicated on extreme nationalism and love of country taken to an extreme. I enjoyed the book, but reading between the lines the society does have a very fascist vibe.

I haven't read the book, but I saw the movie in the theater when it came out. I have no idea what are you talking about.

Read the book then. If you could not see the hyperbolic fascist symbolism in the film, I don't know what to say.

Hopefully in the remake there is some actual common sense applied. Rather than waste, 3000 rounds of ammunition trying to kill a bug you would think they would have a giant can of Raid. I guess that wouldn't make for a great movie though.

Any remake must duplicate the "the GD bugs whacked us Johnny" line. That never fails to make me chuckle.

don't know if this is true but I read the actors (both male and female) weren't all that thrilled about shooting that scene and they all said as a group they'd only agree to do it if the director got naked during its filming….

I understand what you're saying and can somewhat agree on the vibe. The main point I was trying to make was that I hope the showrunners represent the spirit of what Heinlein wrote rather than attempt another satirical mockery.

As JK said above, I can enjoy the '97 movie in it's own right but I don't consider it a faithful representation of the book at all.

The book is as much about the structure of society, citizenship, duty and service for the greater good as it is bugs in space. Heinlein (the author) was a graduate of the Naval Academy and served until he was dismissed due to TB and clearly personally believed in some of these ideals.

The director of the 1997 movie (and many others then and since), thought it more of a treatise on fascism, and he intentionally set out to make the film an outlandish satire that is mocking the ideas of Heinlien and the original novel. Not a bad film, but 100% orthogonal to Heinlein's intent nonetheless.

This. Not that I necessarily agree with the ideas about citizenship and service that Heinlein presents in the novel but it certainly was not fascism.

Remake of starship troopers but instead of bugs it's an airborne virus.

Instead of the mobile infantry, it's hero doctors and nurses dancing on tiktok as a ritual to combat the virus.

Instead of service guarantees citizenship it's 'a current booster guarantees citizenship.'

Co-ed showers stay the same though.

'Everyone fights, no one quits' also stays the same.

Yeah, it has to have a bunch of celebrities singing a song to fight it also if you want it realistic.

I like it.

A musical montage like when the A-Team would all be pitching in to construct a kill-dozer in the back of an abandoned shed.

Did you ever notice that the best entertainment in the history of our world always has Michael Ironside in it?

V
Starship Troopers
Total Recall
Top Gun
X-Men: First Class
Watchers
Extreme Prejudice
Darkseid in Justic League Unlimited

And from his Wikipedia:
Ironside has survived cancer of the bowel, prostate, and thyroid.

For the record, I've never heard of "ScreenGeek," and this news isn't being picked up/reported by literally anyone else. I'm not saying it's not true, and I wouldn't be surprised if a reboot is in the works, but the chances of a rinky-dink, no-name site breaking this news are pretty slim.
