I liked him most for his idea of sending California into the Pacific Ocean.

Great actor. An American treasure.

I always thought the coolest thing about Hackman is he didn't care who he was going up against in the cast. Tons of actors are scared to be overshadowed and he'd share the screen with the biggest actors in the world.

Enemy of the State - Will Smith
Absolute Power & Unforgiven - Clint Eastwood
Crimson Tide - Denzel Washington
Wyatt Earp & No Way Out - Kevin Costner
The Firm - Tom Cruise

While he was primarily a dramatic actor, he also picked a handful of entertaining comedies to be in.
The Royal Tenenbaums
Heartbreakers
The Replacements (guilty pleasure)
The Birdcage
Get Shorty
Young Frankenstein
Waiting on a Natty

I think a suicide pact would include the dog. And the fact the dog dies makes me think it IS suicide.

Saw him on TMZ or something a couple months ago and at 95 he was almost unrecognizable- understandably. When was the last time we had seen him in a movie?

Welcome to Mooseport in 2004 was his last credited acting role

Swayze in uncommon valor. Not a masterpiece of a movie but it had some fantastic lines. Plus, Randall tex Cobb.

One of my favorite actors of all time. So great. Hoosiers is the greatest sports drama of all time (Major League would be the greatest sports comedy).

I thought it was admirable that he just said, "My work is done. I'm retiring" and stayed that way

The biggest problem with Uncommon Valor had nothing to do with GH. The opening shot of some guys doing some training with mountains in the background, and a caption that said something like "north of Galveston, Texas"

Narrow Margin was a fun movie. They actually previewed that at the MSC when I was a student in my last semester before graduating. I don't think I watched it again until just recently when I acquired a number of the Peter Hyams' directed movies.

I had a speech prepared, but I guess I forgot it. There are some lines from Julius Caesar.. 'If a man were to know the end of this day's business ere it come; But it suffice that the day will end, and then the end is known. If we meet again, well then we'll smile, and if not then this parting was well made.'

Icon. There are so many significant roles and movies over several decades of work. I also respect his retirement, when he was done he was done.

I wish a streaming service would offer a memorial package or special where they would drop all of the films a legendary actor was in for a month or six weeks so you can go to one place and get all the films in their category.

Fox just reported that Hackman was found in a mud room and his wife was found in a bathroom with a space heater nearby, with a prescription bottle with pills scattered around.

Maybe he passed and she decided to go too? Dog doesn't make sense though.

He was obviously on the Epstein list that's about to be released, since everyone in Hollywood is a pedo. And if not, it was the Covid vaccine that did him in.

Suicide never makes sense, but I can certainly see them/her taking the dog out with them.

Unless there's a cat roaming the house alive. If so, that M-effer did it for sure.

Dogs only hate the pill they're supposed to take. Your pills might as well be treats.

Wow, 32-year age difference. You dog, Gene.

Some of his best (imo): Hoosiers, Mississippi Burning, Crimson Tide, Absolute Power, Enemy of the State, Heist...

Yep, and still safely follows the "(n/2) + 7" rule.

Two comments which are probably the biggest non sequiturs I've ever had in a single post:

- I loved Gene Hackman and came to this board just to read the comments on his career. He was the epitome of gravitas as an actor. He made everything he was in better. Truly one of the greats.

- I've found that the key to getting your dog to take pills is to have more of the bribe ready and in front of his face so that doggo is more focused on the next treat than whatever it is you're hiding the pill in. That way he wolfs down the pill so he can get at the next round of treat.
