Home invasion?

Either way, this one sucks.

But why kill the dog? That's the only thing that would give me pause on that scenario.

Very sorry to hear this. Gene Hackman was a legend. I still look at his vast movie list and find ones to watch that I've never seen.

IMO the original Lex Luthor.

RIP to Gene and his wife.

RIP coach.

He was 95! So no surprise there, but the situation seems weird.

Sad news. I feel like he's underrated in some respects. One of my favorites

Semper Fi, fair winds and following seas.

After seeing his first movie at age 10, he knew he wanted to be an actor, but he took an unconventional career path to get his start in Hollywood and joined the Marine Corps. He was only 16 years old and had to lie about his age, which even the Department of Defense admits was a pretty common practice at the time.
After joining the Corps in 1947, he first served as a radio operator before making a move into broadcast journalism, becoming an announcer on Armed Forces Radio. But the Marines of Hackman's era weren't just reporting the news. He was sent first to Qingdao, then Shanghai in the middle of the Chinese Civil War with the mission of destroying Japanese military equipment to keep it out of the hands of the communists.
Hackman participated in Operation Beleaguer, the Marine Corps' occupation of China's Hebei and Shandong provinces that sought to repatriate displaced Korean and Japanese people after World War II. In Shandong, where he was stationed, the communists were far stronger than other areas of China and controlled most of the countryside outside of Qingdao. The operation was not without incident: Thirteen Marines were killed and 43 were wounded in ambushes and skirmishes with the Chinese communists.

Probably my top 5 of his movies:

No Way Out
The Firm
French connection
Hoosiers
Young Frankenstein

The Conversation with a young Harrison Ford is pretty solid, too.

He was first choice for Jessup in a Few Good Men.

He turned down Jessup to star in Unforgiven, then beat Nicholson for the Best Supporting Oscar in the role.

Or the dog attacks the intruder and he kills it first then takes out Gene and his wife. If not that scenario or gas it's a VERY personal murder to take out the dog as well.

Saw him on TMZ or something a couple months ago and at 95 he was almost unrecognizable- understandably. When was the last time we had seen him in a movie?

French Connection- excellent
Hoosiers - one of my top 10 all time
The Firm - was so good playing a sad pathetic crooked lawyer with zero moral compass.
Unforgiven - a great foil to Eastwood

I was thinking about Hackman a few weeks ago. He was 95, and this is how it ends for him? An all time great. I watch Hoosiers at least twice a year. The greatest sports movie of all time.

I love Hoosiers, but I would have to say Remember the Titans as the greatest sports movie of all-time.

Just an incredible career and so many great films. Came to know him forst in Superman when I was 12.

Of course The Firm, Hoosiers, No Way Out, Crimson Tide, Mississippi Burning, Unforgiven among my favorites of his.

Another one not mentioned as often was Absolute Power starring and directed by Eastwood with Hackman playing the President.

I think people tend to think of his serious roles but two of my favorites with him in it are comedies:
Royal Tennenbaums - playing the patriarch in this farcical Wes Anderson movie
The Birdcage - playing the Senator whose son is marrying into a gay south beach family was great too, he ends up in drag at the end of the movie to avoid being seen which was awesome. Side role for him but really great.

He was great in both of those really showing his comedic side.

I found his earlier work like French Connection, Bonnie and Clyde, Poseidon Adventure, and A Bridge Too Far later in life but always loved his roles.

RIP.

My favorite role of his was undoubtedly Lex Luthor (I'll ignore his participation in the fourth Superman movie). But the roles that always stuck with me were in Unforgiven, The Conversation, The French Connection, No Way Out, and Crimson Tide. He was always such a great presence in whatever movie he was in. Enemy of the State. A Bridge Too Far (although he was just one familiar face among a whole slew of familiar faces in that one). Hoosiers.

Yeah seems logical with no signs of foul play. And a suicide pact thing would not likely involve the dog.

I liked him most for his idea of sending California into the Pacific Ocean.

Great actor. An American treasure.
If it were easy, anybody could do it.

Or no foul play suspected. That's the big clue.
