I don't understand why this show gets so much hate online. I've always found it to be pretty funny. A lot of the humor is crude, especially Wolowitz, but I think a lot of it can be pretty smart, too. The relationship between Penny and Sheldon is great. They absolutely don't understand each other, but are still friends. Whenever I run across reruns, I still laugh. I feel like this was the last great network sitcom.

I like it. It's a sitcom. Not Shakespeare. Shut brain off. Enjoy.

Never seen the hate, but agree it's good. The writer's are fantastic and humor is on point.

Any show with a laugh track will always sound awkward without it because they build in the pauses to allow for the laugh track.

I also read that anytime they would put an equation or formula on a whiteboard, even if it was just on the background of some minor scene, they had experts confirm that it was correct. I appreciate stuff like that.

Seinfeld taped in front of a live audience.

So did Big Bang Theory.

There was no laugh track.

It was shot with an audience.

Seinfeld absolutely used a laugh track, Jerry Seinfeld even admitted to it. The show was also filmed in front of a live audience.

I'm not trying to defend Big Bang Theory, I think the show is just ok, but sitcoms filmed in front of a live audience isn't exactly what you think. First, it's not live like the way live theater or SNL is live. One episode can take multiple hours with many takes of one scene. Scenes aren't necessarily filmed in sequential order and only part of the show is actually filmed live. If you were to view a screening of Seinfeld, you are only going to see about half the show live (the scenes in the apartments) with the rest being filmed off studio. Plants are inserted into the audience to encourage laughter, and laugh tracks are used in post production to enhance the laughter, especially if a joke doesn't hit quite as well. Also, the laughs that you hear on tv may not even be the laughter that was actually used on that take. For example, if the first take got the most laughs, those laughs will be spliced into the take that was actually used for the tv episode.

Also, Seinfeld has pauses and is just as awkward as BBT when the laugh track is taken out.

I didn't hate the show, but It was about supposedly smart people, and while nerdy there was very little actually smart about it, it was pretty low brow in the end. They would give it fancy episode titles to spruce it up, but half the time those didn't even make sense.
It was also more or less a Seinfeld or Friends rip off, so it wasn't even that original. Shot in an apartment, daily travails of a group of 20 ro 30:something's etc.
Just never really understood its popularity.

The internet is full of angry nerds and it's pretty easy to watch big bang and feel that they aren't laughing with nerds but at them.

Also, angry internet nerds love to gatekeep their hobbies, and lots of the nerd culture they would display was barely scratching the surface of the nerddom, like with board games. Ain't no way those guys were playing Settlers of Catan. They'd be going full blown Twilight Imperium or Campaign for North Africa.

I could turn my brain off and enjoy it, but there were times where they ruined a pretty good joke by going further and fully explaining the joke to morons who couldn't grasp what was already pretty on the nose.

I've always found the Sheldon character to be so absurd that I often just roll my eyes at his lines. But it's not a bad show overall ... typical Chuck Lorre sitcom.

I'm old so I don't mind laugh tracks.

What network sitcom on now is better than BBT?

Bobs Burgers? Abbott Elementaty?

Most are hot garbage.

Laugh tracks don't bother me that much. I love Friends, That 70's Show, and the earlier seasons of How I Met Your Mother. Also, all sitcoms are "turn your brain off an enjoy" in one way or another. However, I've always felt the Big Bang Theory to be extremely shallow. It's fine, but i've always been surprised by how popular it was.

It also seems like it's a show about nerds that isn't written by nerds.

It is interesting to think about the laugh track format shows versus the ones without. As a writer and actor, i'm sure you have to think about them completely differently. I love Scrubs and New Girl, and they are able to get just as many laughs from me as shows with laugh tracks.

Funny you say that. I actually watched an interview with Julie Louis Dreyfus this morning where talked a little bit about that. She said she prefers to have a studio audience because she can use their reaction to tell if she got the timing/delivery right.

Look how long the laugh is after George pulls out the golf ball after the "sea was angry that day my friends" speech.

Definitely live audience.

We watched it regularly when it was on and it knew exactly what it was and didn't try to change itself.

It's still good background noise today. You can generally turn an episode on and come and go and keep the thread of the episode. No deep thoughts, no major plot issues, just good simple entertainment.

This is why people hate on it. The show got super popular, it's fine but way oversaturated the zeitgeist. Putting BBT in your top five sitcoms is atrocious.
