Saw another post about the anticipation of Marvel's Infinity War and Endgame movies. Those were likely two of the most anticipated movies for me ever. But that was an anticipation I hadn't had in a long time.

For me, I'd say the most anticipated was The Empire Strikes Back, but probably more accurately it was Return of the Jedi. I was 10 when Star Wars came out. I can't say I really knew much about movies, didn't have access to the movie information we have nowadays, and am not even sure when I learned that a second Star Wars movie was being made. But I do recall seeing a trailer for it, attached to the END - after credits - of Star Wars, in August 1979. That next 9 months was hell for me waiting for Empire to release.

But with Jedi, I knew that was being made in 1980. Three years. My daughter whined about having to wait a year between Infinity War and Endgame; I referred her to that 3 year wait between Empire and Jedi.

Other titles with similar anticipation for me would be Batman '89 and The Phantom Menace.

Revenge of the Sith - I really only became a huge Star Wars fan in 03-04, after seeing TPM / AOTC in theaters, and then buying the OT on DVD in 2004. By 2005, I was all in and super hyped for ROTS. I remember talking about it a lot in high school with other students who were really excited for it too.

Matrix Reloaded

Terminator 2. Was a huge fan of the first as a kid, all Arnold movies were a major event at the time, and the trailers for T2 blew my mind.

The Phantom Menace came out when I was in 7th or 8th grade (can't remember exactly). Remember being so super hyped for that as was my dad.

My dad got me out of school early on a Friday opening weekend and we went to west oaks mall to watch it together. Still remember that to this day.

Everyone has their own views deservedly, but nationally, nothing can compare with Phantom Menace. An entire generation saw their childhood brought back from the biggest movie phenomen ever made. Always knowing there were 6 more out there, but never knowing if they would come. When the "A long time ago" popped up it was truly a surreal moment.
This video sums it up pretty well, when you get to the end of this and opening starts, no other movie anywhere could do this to people. It was a truly emotional experience seeing it come back. Only sucks the movie itself wasn't better,

An off the radar movie for me was Panic Room. After Se7en and Fight Club, Fincher was basically God and couldn't wait to see it. It wasn't bad, but not nearly as good as the other two.

The Dark Knight. Felt like I waited a year for it to be released. Wouldn't watch a single trailer but read all about it. That was the most excited I had ever been to see a movie.

As a kid(ish), easily The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark. As one who had to beg his dad to drive me and my friends halfway across Houston only to be disappointed with Ralph Bakshi's half telling of LOTR, although Peter Jackson did borrow a few ideas for his adaptation, it was nice to see an excellent version brought to the big screen. Same thing with Dune.

Some that come to mind…
Back to the Future 2
Ghostbusters 2
Batman v Superman
Matrix Reloaded
Kill Bill vol 1 (there had been a 6 year gap between Kill Bill and Jackie Brown)

But as already mentioned, nothing compares to the hype train that was The Phantom Menace.

Has to be Endgame for me. Simply because I was there from Opening night with Iron Man to that moment. Saw every Marvel film in that run on opening night. What a ride.

Also The Force Awakens was pretty high up there. The trailer was legit and everyone was psyched. Did the marathon at Cinemark 17 in Dallas that started with Episode 1 at 2 AM

Pretty good list of them on here, but I'll second the last post. Especially the first LOTR. Fellowship.

I remember seeing the initial teaser trailer for it in theaters…. Had no idea when I saw the trailer that it was even a thing, so the shock and the grandeur of the snowy mountain in that trailer, and then to see it was Lord of the Rings…. Man, I was so pumped and excited.

Still, I will agree with most in here, the tops was Phantom. Just such a huge anticipation leading up to it.

To piggy back off this...

The Waterboy was very successful at the box office because it had the first trailer for the Phantom Menace. People would buy tickets, watch the preview, and then leave.

This is probably mine. Brother and I saw the crappy I Am Legend in IMAX just bc they were showing the opening scene of TDK as a preview

I love Vanilla Sky, but I'm curious what it was about it that had you that hyped for it from just the trailers?

I am/was a giant Cameron Crowe fan. And it was coming on the heels of Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, two of my all-time favorite movies. Throw in the Cruise/slight sci-fi angle and I couldn't wait.
