Been listening to these guys a lot lately. Ill Communication album is pretty damn good. Almost every track.

Saw the documentary a few years ago. Interesting stuff.

Their sound holds up.

This won't be a popular take. I loved their stuff up through Ill communication. After that their stuff just sounded like they were trying too hard.
But I know no matter what the waitress brings
I shall drink it and always be full, yeah I will drink it and always be full

I realize this is true with a lot of music but your favorite Beastie Boys album seems to be particularly tied to whenever you were 18-21. With that said, I'm going with Check Your Head.

My favorite Beastie Boys album came out when I was 7.

I miss when dudes would get in the booth together and just go back and forth on the track. Licensed to Ill is still my album of choice from them.

Nowadays you get vocals recorded in different places stitched together. It's not the same energy.

I remember I was visiting my sister in the Denver area when I was 15 and hello nasty came out and best buy was giving out a free promo record with the first 100 purchases or something like that. I got up super early and rode a bike about 10 miles to the nearest best buy and missed the promo by about 5 minutes. I was ultra bummed.

That same trip I picked up aglio e olio at a store on the 16th Street mall. I used to freaking love the beastie boys.

OP - there must have been something in the universe this past week because I started listening to the BB for the first time in years over the weekend. Not sure what prompted it.

Licensed to Ill will always hold a special place (I was obsessed with Paul Revere), but I was the right age/timeframe to appreciate Check Your Head when it came out.

I respect that take, but I was listening to "Hello Nasty" the other day and thought it held up very well. Maybe it just brings back good memories from HS, but I thought it was a very innovated and groovy hip hop sound.

"Make Some Noise" from HSC can stand with anything from the 1st 3 albums

When I first listened to Paul's Boutique, I couldn't stop for like two months. How they put all those samples together with the tech at the time is literally insane.

I will casually throw, "You're all mixed up, like pasta Primavera" into conversations now and then. Haha

Ha it's funny you mention Denver, because for my first real introduction to Beatie Boys, I remember being in a smaller town outside of Denver on a family road trip around 1990-1991. I was roughly 10 or 11.

We stopped at a gas station and I was walking back out to the car and I heard what I thought was the most awesome sound I had ever heard...I looked over and it was some hardass too-cool-for-school lookin white dude in a jacked up Toyota Tacoma with a feathery mullet and m-frames, sporting a gaudy windbreaker...Just sitting there with his door open, blasting "Posse in Effect" at top volume and bass.

The only thing I knew is that it was Beastie Boys bc I had heard "fight for your right" before and their voices sounded similar enough...but I soon found out what track that was and became a huge fan of that album (and that song in particular) after that. Roughly 32 yrs ago and I can still picture everything exactly how it was. I wanted to be that guy. But I have fallen short.

Paul's Boutique was still Rick Rubin right? "3 Minute Rule" is a jam.

They ruined it for me years ago. I think License to Ill was only like 25 years old at the time, yet Rod Ryan had them on repeat on the New Rock station.

I still listen to FM when I am not going too far. Not messing with my phone every time I get in the truck, and I let the XM lapse during covid and just never started it back up. Not in the truck that much anymore.

Did a huge Dive with the Beasties for about a month last year. Every CD slams. Pauls Boutique is prob my favorite but they all really good.

Beastie Boys are one of those GOAT established bands that are still underrated by most people.

I feel that about the Bluetooth. My truck auto connects and it's 12 years old so ik always listening to something in it. Wife's Expy doesn't and it's 3 years old. If it doesn't connect it defaults to AM bs so I just drive in silence.

Check out their instrumental album if you haven't, The Mix-Up. Just sounds like songs they put together playing around in the studio, Off the Grid is my favorite. I love all their albums though, I couldn't pick a definitive favorite.

I spend nearly 40 hours a week in an office by myself typing/ working. I'm constantly burning through music of all types and let me say thankyou to the OP for reminding me of a very very good band. They're not making them like this anymore. This music has so much personality and passion than most.

For your six degrees of separation, I just stopped by to say that I was shopping one day at VONS on Pass Ave in Burbank and as I was walking past this guy, I thought, hmmm... that dude looks like "Ad Rock" from The Beastie Boys. And that other dude looks like MCA.

I was in a hurry and had completely missed the 3 matching "Beastie Boys" tour buses in the parking lot across the street from the Graciela (now Hotel Amarano). I saw the guys headed back to the buses when I came out of the store.

It was before I moved to Australia so my guess based on tour dates, etc. is that it must have been August 2007.
