How about Pearl Jam's Dark Matter? What song on that album do you think is going to stand the test of time?

Setting Sun or Waiting for Stevie.

And I'll probably listen to it until it's time for me to leave this place.

I really don't care what other people like or don't like.

Except those that don't like Pearl Jam. It tells me you suck.

There is some good rock music that has come out post-2010. The problem is that rock isn't mainstream like it used to be. You have to search for it. Spotify Weekly playlist is great for finding bands you never heard of and then going down the rabbit hole. Most people aren't album listeners though, and they miss out on hearing great songs because of that.

I'm relatively young and I think music sucks right now.

As another poster said, occasionally the Spotify algorithm will queue me a cool indie or random artist that impresses me:

I think a big part of music quality decline is young people are glued to their phones all of the time. They aren't really ever bored, and they don't connect in person a lot.

I'd imagine a lot of great music was made because there wasn't much else to do. Now we just watch porn or play video games.

Seems to me there's a higher value on rhythm and beat in today's pop music. Really could argue this started in the late 80s with the rise of rap and into the 90s with hip hop.

I will admit that even though I was born in 72 and in high school in the late 80s, I envied the music of the 60s and 70s. Was a bit out of step with most of my peers back then.

Oh and questioning the relevance of GNR is lunacy. Their early stuff absolutely holds up. Welcome to the Jungle is an all-timer.

It's hard finding new music or artists to enjoy.

I have mainly been listening to Texas/red dirt country the last few years. I have noticed as bands get bigger their music gets less interesting. I really think this has to do with the songwriting.

I have never written a song, and imagine it can be very challenging, and I think there is something to say about people's creativity when they are scrapping to get by, writing through pain/difficult times vs trying to pop out another album. As the saying goes, "you have your whole life to creat your first album, but only 12 months for your second."

Being able to string together multiple high quality albums has got to be one of the more difficult accomplishments.

I find it hard to enjoy most new music. That might just be my age showing... But if I'm going to listen to rock or alternative, it's older stuff. I can't get into newer artists. The sounds have either gotten stale or have turned into something I can't vibe with.

The only genre that I'm able to somewhat keep up to date on is hip hop. With the proliferation of hip hop, I find it much easier to discover new artists and sub genres I enjoy. There are certainly rappers I don't enjoy, but I feel like it's still growing in interesting ways that other genres aren't.

I think its easier than ever given the availability of Spotify and Tidal, etc who all have various features to find new content. Add to that various social media outlets. But it IS complicated by the sheer quantity of new music being put out.

This is a perfect example of the modern hit song.

Drum machines. Repetitive chord structure. Overly breathy vocals. That hip-hop lyrical style of lots of words crammed into a measure. No dynamics. No key change. No bridge. No real instruments.

If this were written and produced in the '70s or '80s, it wouldn't be a bad song. It's catchy.

But it needs to be opened up dynamically with an arrangement that has some spark and verve. To use a current artist as an example, imagine Bruno Mars performing this, with a real band behind him.

painfully bad lyrics. wow

To clarify, this was always about popular music (just music in general, what most people are enjoying), which may include the specific pop music genre.

I had to look it up (and what I found made me smile), but GnR's Sweet Child O' Mine was ranked #5 in Billboard's Hot 100 Singles of 1988.

And coming in at #4
LOL
And it's garbage. GNR did not stand the test of time.

But even if you like it, it's popular doesn't mean it's pop music.

Saying GnR hasn't stood the test of time is just dumb.

Prove my opinion wrong.
Prove your point right.

I'm a teacher, so I'm around kids all day and have a pretty good idea on what older music is still relevant today. Kids listen to Guns N Roses. Walk into any high school basketball game, Hell, any sporting event in America and at some point in time, you'll hear Welcome to the Jungle. You'll see kids wearing Guns N Roses t-shirts in the hallways (they aren't wearing White Snake, Def Leppard, and Poison t-shirts) and their songs have been played in current commercials
I see Def Lepp shirts pretty often in pediatric clinic- parents and kids. Also see lots of Metallica, ACDC, Nirvana.

Yeah. it's as easy as putting on a song on Spotify you like then hitting the Radio button.

If anyone needs a seed artist for new music that sounds classic try Dirty Honey on your streaming platform of choice. They are fun live as well saw them open for Black Crowes.

This. Hitting the radio button on a song gives a much better playlist than artist radio.
