7. No - Rush

I like Genesis, saw them live at Texas Stadium in early '92. Always preferred Collins to Gabriel, but solo I liked both.

Edited to add:
2. Land of Confusion - video was awesome
4. Invisible Touch

Geddy Lee sounds like a screeching drunk parakeet. His vocals are some of the worst I have ever heard. If they had decent vocals, I probably could have gotten into them because I like Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart was obviously fantastic. Although as a drummer I was always disappointed that Neil didn't do more on the albums.

But even disregarding the vocals, nothing Rush did holds a candle to Tool's Lateralus, 10,000 Days, or Fear Inoculum albums.

I know this is probably against any and all good reason, but I think carpet crawlers is under appreciated. Jesus He Knows me or Mama are probably my favorite Phil Collins-sung songs. Although Land of Confusion is fantastic as well. As someone said earlier, the music video was one of the very best of the early years on MTV.

If you don't know what you're doing, do it quickly.

Yes, and EL&P were "prog rock" before anyone knew what "prog rock" was.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

Styx is my favorite prog rock band. In my mind true prog rock is a sound that was late 60s to late 80s.

Honorable mention for me strictly for Children of the Sun is Billy Thorpe

good stuff….i was really thinking that one of the first replies would be "what is considered prog rock"….glad we skipped that one…

not surprised to see no love for the Gabriel years, although they were phenomenal…the quirky lyrics and his stage presence can be off-putting to some…someone mentioned Carpet Crawlers earlier…good call…I would nominate The Lamb Lies Down as my favorite Gabriel-era album….

early Collin's-era was peak Genesis for me…still very prog…but each follow-up album seemed to contain more and more commercial, sappy material….they lost me at the release of Invisible Touch….

as for the greatest prog band, my vote goes to Yes….followed by Genesis….then King Crimson

also, thanks for no monologue from American Psycho…

Have to agree with you on Yes. And I've seen Rush 5 times. Geddy is a huge Chris Squire fan, and would probably agree with your assessment.

And for all this Styx/Prog nonsense, stop it. Blue Collar Man, Renegade , Too Much Time on my Hands…closer to Cheap Trick than Yes or Rush.

All of their Steve Hackett material is great. Selling England by the Pound is my fav album with Firth of Fifth probably my fav song. A couple of years ago Hackett toured and played the entire album. Unfortunately I wasn't able to catch a show.

Regarding Yes, I was fortunate to see them back in '04 when Chris Squire was still alive. Great stuff. They had Dream Theater as the opener, and they were great too.

1. Favorite Gabriel-era song - Cinema Show

2. Favorite Collins-era song - tie - Abacab or Home by the Sea I/II

3. Favorite Gabriel-era album - Selling England by the Pound

4. Favorite Collins-era album - Duke

5. Most under-rated song - Blood on the Rooftops

6. Least enjoyable popular song - Hold on My Heart (this is a crap, syrupy song, worst thing Genesis ever did)

7. Greatest prog band of all time? No. For me that's King Crimson, the very definition of a band that progressed throughout it's entire history. "In the Court of the Crimson King" sounds nothing like "Red", which sounds nothing like "Discipline", which sounds nothing like "The Power to Believe".

** Honorable mentions include Yes, Genesis, Rush, & Gentle Giant

Look who is back! Welcome.

I love Phil Collins so much and have never seen him live. Was just talking about him yesterday given it was his birthday two days ago and was told by a friend whose Dad knows him from all the Alamo artifact stuff that he's apparently not doing very well physically unfortunately.

He sat in a chair on stage for the entire final Genesis tour in 2021. And had to be assisted to walk off stage.

my first concert ever was Genesis on 8/14/82 at The Summit in Houston....my mom dropped my brother and I off at the show....i remember only recognizing Turn It On Again and Abacab....i look back at that setlist nowadays and realize what a killer show that probably was....need to go back in time and tell that 13 year old kid to pay attention because this band would still be important 40+ years later.....

DoDo-Lurker, the Three-Sides live version, with Chester Thompson on drums, is a great tune. One of their last true prog tunes.

My first show was Van Halen when I was 14, Women and Children First tour. Like you, only knew a few radio songs, and the newly released And the Cradle Will Rock. And due to the sensory overload, I was unable to really appreciate what I was witnessing (from the 15th row floor no less). Simply mind (and ear) blowing. What I would give to go back in time for one night…

And sneak a damn camera in!

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your a**hole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Older brother had me educated up on many bands as a youth. VH was one of them.

2nd concert ever was VH on the Diver Down tour in '82. Fifth row. Snuck in a Kodak disc camera.

It was glorious. And freaking loud.

One of my friends talked me into going to see Genesis in 1987 at The Summit in Houston - it was the first show of the second leg of the Invisible Touch tour. I was familiar with a few of their songs but at that point probably knew his solo stuff better.

They opened the show with Mama - I was blown away - probably why it's still my favorite Genesis song. The power in Collins' lyrics and the build up of the drums as the song progresses gets me every time I hear it. Others include Domino, Home By The Sea, and Turn It On Again.

Saw them again at the Astrodome in the early 90's for the Way We Walk tour, but that was the last time. So disappointed that they didn't come to the southern US at all for their 2007 tour or the recent final tour.

I saw Phil's last solo tour in both Vegas and Dallas several years ago. He was relegated to sitting the entire show due to his various health issues and his voice just didn't measure up to his prime - still loved the shows though.

The 2007 When In Rome concert video and corresponding CD are on constant play on my devices - the classic Collins voice and presence on stage that I will always enjoy.
