2001: A Space Odyssey, filmed in 1968, depicts video screens in the back of seats on a "flight" as well as a video call made to family from space. In pretty realistic fashion.

Most of this movie looks like it could have been made a year ago:

I just re-watched Black Hawk Down recently. That one looked like it literally just happened. Not to say it beats Private Ryan / 2001.

Yea pretty much anything from 2001. Even the part at the beginning when the leopard jumped off the small cliff top onto the proto-human/ape. I mean how the f do you do that using nothing but practical effects?

Movies about historical events seem to be "cheating". Like is Private Ryan any more "non-dated" than any other WW2 movie? They are flying around in WW2 planes, carrying WW2 rifles, wearing WW2 gear.

My answer is this scene. The special effects still holds up damn well today:

I always thought Minority Report did a good job of creating a world of the not-super-distant future. The FX also hold up pretty well I think for a movie now 20+ years old.

I was going to say all of Jurassic Park.

I don't recall one scene that doesn't hold up. MAYBE some of the computer/security technology that had at the park.

There is literally ONE thing that I think doesn't hold up, and you have to be really anal to notice. It's was a shot of the T-rex that wasn't CGI that you could tell it was some sort of prop head on a CAT or something, because it rocks and forth a little. That's it. That's all I can think of.

Balrog scene in The Fellowship. Actually most all scenes in LOTR as it was made 25 years ago

Everything holds up crazy well except the Ents and gollum start to look dated now.

Also:all of George Lucas's breakthrough CGI and the best part of the movie is a guy in a really scary mask who knows how to do flying karate.

Ep 2 is terrible CGI though. Ep 3 is marginally better.

I always thought the Velcro boots the flight attendants wore were so cool. So many extremely well done details that still feel futuristic and practical instead of flashy.

The Abyss is showing its age a little, but still holds up super well for a 36 year old movie.

In a world of hyper PC, I'll say Blazing Saddles and Tropic Thunder make me LMFAO because they're actually outrageously funny.

That NEVER goes out of style.

Every scene in Toy Story. That movie turns 30 years old this year. Also, lots of scenes in Minority Report, but the personalized advertising definitely came true.

Another vote for 2001. This looks better than any modern CGI.

Good callouts on Jurassic Park and The Abyss. I always felt like the first scene of Lost World was to show off how far things had come; most of JP was at night or in the wet jungle so things could be hidden and obscured a bit, whereas the first scene in Lost World is "here's 20+ tiny dinosaurs interacting with human actors in broad daylight".

Others on my list:

The Matrix did a fantastic job staying technology agnostic, there's little things like the type of phone and some of the computers but the cool retro aesthetic of the real world still holds up really well and feels very current.

The Fifth Element is almost 30 years old and still looks incredible aside from a few of the costume/makeup aliens (which still aren't bad), the design and art direction in this film is amazing.

Gattaca is light on the obvious VFX but thematically and technology wise is still an amazing watch.

Other FX/tech heavy films that still look great: Avatar, all of the rebooted Planet of the Apes films, Finding Nemo
