EDIT: I am not usually one for warnings, but I feel like this might warrant it. The allegations involve BDSM, rape, vomit, and other pretty extreme things. The title of the article is "There Is No Safe Word".

Vulture has a new longform article on Neil Gaiman out today. It basically details all of the allegations of sexual assault and harassment against him. His behavior has been pretty well known within the industry for quite awhile but I figured this might be new to some people.

It boils down to aside from him being a general sex pest/creep he is/was really into BDSM play and did not believe is safe words, consent, or stopping unless he wanted to.

It's always interesting that these creeps' behaviors are well known but yet no one says anything until someone is brave enough to step up.

I don't feel like this isn't the first story about him and these accusations. It seems like there is an annual story about this but it just doesn't stick super well. I do know some TV or movie stuff was put on hold shortly after a previous story was put out.

I think that probably speaks to what is known vs what can you prove or have evidence of. Unfortunately that's often how it is with cases of rape and sexual assault. It's also really daunting to be the person who comes forward when your abuser is a wildly famous and well liked person.

James Dashner was another one. He was always creeping up on women at conferences and signings, especially at after parties. A few anonymous people outed him in the comments section of an online article and then more stories started popping up. A dear friend of mine agreed to put her name to her story and publicly talk about how he aggressively came on to her at an event and groped her.

Nothing wrong with consensual BDSM...but that bolded part is basically rape. If true, he needs to be put down.

About halfway through now - color me surprised Gaiman's parents were devout Scientologists. That **** needs to be eradicated.

Quote:

After they'd been together for a few years, Palmer began asking Gaiman to tell her more about his childhood in Scientology. But he seemed unable to string more than a few sentences together. When she encouraged him to continue, he would curl up on the bed into a fetal position and cry.

If you read the article, it absolutely was rape or sexual assault in several instances.

There was a really interesting comment the article that talked about how people who are very into fantasy conventions are super vulnerable to this kind of thing, they make these books their identity and want to deeply connect with the authors. Makes a lot of sense.

I'd argue that's a trait that a lot of convention goers are susceptible to. If you look, you can find a lot of similar stories about voice actors and other known people at comic conventions.

these long form articles exhaust me. 600+ words before we even mention the subject of the article.

Neil Gaiman's works are super cringe edgelord fiction. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!

Gotta hand it to NG's marketing team though. They duped lots of folks into believing he was the face of dark fantasy literature for like 20 years.

Totally, you could probably apply it to any rabid fandom.

He's denying all the stuff happened without consent, which is pretty different than denying everything.
