My wife is gifting me one for Christmas and needs some ideas.

I imagine most record players with built in sound is no bueno.

What's a good record player with line out capabilities to play through your own speakers?

What is your current set-up?

back in the day, turntables had line out level outputs, and stereo receivers had "phono" inputs that connected through a pre-amp. linear tracking was the thing to have. my turntable was a Technics. I forget what brand my cartridge was. No idea what the best options are today.

Not sure why vinyl has made a comeback (except for DJ'ing/scratching) as CD sound quality is far superior, but it's easy to fool the masses.

Audio Technica is a decent entry level turntable. I've had one for years. I recently bought a Fluance turntable for the living room and enjoy it. I know these are not top of the line but they are good sounding for very reasonable price.

Because analog sounds better. The analog nature of it imparts something to the signal, so you're right, it isn't as high quality or as accurate to what was recorded, but for whatever reason, it generally sounds warmer and more pleasant.

I have a pro-ject carbon debut turntable with their phono box hooked up to two Q Acoustics M20 bookshelf speakers. I upgraded to an acrylic platter and that made a big difference.

I got all my stuff from crutchfield because I can ask them a million questions and they don't get pissed ha wonderful customer service that is very knowledgeable

This is the turntable I have too and it's great... I'm unfamiliar with acrylic platters being better. How does that work?

It's all theoretical that it's heavier and less resonant, meaning a more consistent speed and less vibration sent to the needle. To me it made a difference.

No releases matter in the slightest if you are using an insufficient player. A vintage turntable is an absolute must. I recommend a Pink Triangle deck.

The most authentic equipment can be found in Scotland's rural antique shoppes, a trip far beyond even the imagination of your average American "music" consumer.

A minimum rig would be something like:

Linn Sondek LP 12 - Adikt cartridge
Naim Stageline
Naim Supernait II
Klipsch Cornwall IIIs
REL S/5 SHO

However, to listen properly a higher-level set-up is recommended. For example:
- TechDas Air Force One
- Clearaudio Statement v2
- La Platine Magnum
- Goldmund Reference II

Obviously people's opinions can vary slightly here, and few appreciate a liquid nitrogen-rectified belt, or some other "non-essential" features. Which is … Fine. But it's amusing how few appreciate the player, and focus on music. Well, hardware matters.

Truly the only way to properly enjoy vinyl is with a worthy player.

Thank you all for the deep dive!! I will go on another deep dive tonight and let you know what I end up choosing. I probably will begin with something lighter on the wallet although I do consider myself an audiophile, but I'll buy something nicer down the line.

As people mentioned in the thread, I believe the tones and bumps of the record produces a very different sound. They say each time you compress the recording down it loses "quality" if you will.

Record>CD>MP3>etc…

Thanks again. Great discussion here

Been going on a dive into this myself and for new reasonably priced turntables I believe Fluance is well thought of and a step above the Audio Technicas.

For the older somewhat reasonably priced option stick to Technics. They made a ton of them and they just work and there are parts.

Worth spending money on better cartridges.

Be aware of amp needs. If your receiver has a phono input then your turntable doesn't need one. If no phono inputs then need a table with a built in amp.

That's all I got

I started a few years ago with an Audio Technica LP60 and was happy with it. About a year ago I upgraded to a Rega Planar 1 Plus and love it.

I read a while back that only 5% of people could consistently differentiate analog vs digital recordings. You can buy a DAC to do the conversion on modern day equipment.

Says it has "pre-AMP." That mean you can hook directly to speakers and don't need receiver?

Yes, if your speakers are powered. If you have passive speakers and just want to hear your phonograph get one of the Chinese class D phono amps on Amazon.

It's amazing how accurately and quickly I can identify a Redstone post without noticing her username first. She's a legend on this board

Eh. His/her bit is so overdone at this point. If I had stars, I would pay to ignore him/her.

And that post was just a copy & paste from one of his earlier HipsterGPT replies to some guy asking where in Houston he could buy Taylor Swift vinyl records for his child. Obviously, one would need to start in the antique shops of rural Scotland to begin assembling the proper equipment.

Look, I've streamed music before, have a carefully curated YouTube favorites listing (including a biannual cull), and appreciate the compactness of the disc format. It's not as if I would tolerate no other formats and regard other listening modes as cultural philistinism.

However, an attentive listener must store the collection in plastic sleeves and clean them with dusters. Learn to balance vinyl between the palms. Appreciate and lower the recording onto my aforementioned turntables as if performing a ritual - for that's what a session should be. Learn to perform inspection of the stylus.

It is not wrong to ask:
We might both enjoy music, we may even like the same artists, but do you listen to them correctly? Do you have an understanding of format?

I wouldn't end relationships over it, but learn to cultivate your musical communications toward education.

Edit:
Please realize, a good vinyl pressing played on a good stereo system is simply superior to any high definition 24-bit digital file. So, find a vinyl sommelier, especially for hardware.

Thats redstone's shtick. There was a time (probably 10 years ago) when it was amusing, but It's become so over the top that it is ridiculous and stupid.

I have an Audio Technica LP120, and some Kanto YU4 self powered bookshelf speakers. Those speakers aren't going to blow the doors off of anything, but they are good for one room. No receiver and/or amp is necessary.

I have the set-up in my office and play records throughout the day.

I also like that the speakers have a bluetooth connection so if I want to play spotify from my phone I can run it through the speakers.

It's a simple set-up that an audiophile would probably scoff at, but I've used it for a few years and like it.
