Long before I ever heard the term "Yacht Rock" and its rise in popularity, I started a playlist called "70's Power Soft" with music that was always in the background at my parent's parties in the 70's. I was very specific when it came to additions -- not too hard / standard rock, not too soft (like Air Supply).

Mount Rushmore is McDonald, Loggins and Cross for sure, the last is tougher and may have to be groups or collabs, like:

England Dan and John Ford Coley
Toto
Little River Band
Steely Dan
Ambrosia
Player
Orleans
Supertramp
Firefall
Wings
I have a tremendous yacht rock playlist. 110 songs.

If bands are included it is Toto and there is no debate.

For solo artists I could nominate a few you have not listed and maybe argue any of these three as the 4th on that Mt. Rushmore:

Gerry Rafferty
Gordon Lightfoot
James Taylor

I'm partial to Gerry Rafferty just because his sound is so spot on yacht rock and so unique.

but I'd actually maybe argue for Donald F agen if we are including solo+Steely Dan

PS - the texags censor list is stupid^^^^

For those wanting a DEEP dive (almost 50 hours and nearly 700 songs) of pure, unadulterated Yacht Rock magic - check out this playlist that gets updated.

Beyond Yacht Rock

Lot's of great stuff there... but it's too broad and includes some stuff that is definitely NOT Yacht Rock. For example I did a double take as soon as I saw EW&F. They are funk and soul and R&B with some jazz. Not Yacht Rock at all.

not to mention Chaka Khan, Ray Parker Jr. Sister Sledge, El Debarge, Pointer Sisters, Stevie Wonder, etc.

smh

I got my fill of that kind of music as a teenager when my dad would drive me to school in the mornings. He always had it on the "lite rock" station. Of course that helped ensure I would become a metalhead in the 80's.

Now I always have "Hair Nation" and "Ozzy's Boneyard" on when I drive the kids. No telling what they'll become fans of in reaction to being forced to hear never ending AC/DC, Judas Priest, GNR, etc.

About 7 or 8 years ago I was driving my daughter to lacrosse game listening to Ozzy's Boneyard and they did an Ultimate Sinner segment. The listener described the back story behind Run To The Hills and the different points of view in the song. My daughter was hooked on Maiden after that. She has a Dad rock playlist on Spotify that's all Maiden, Metallica, Sabbath with some Rush thrown in along with a large grunge selection of AiC, Soundgarden, L7, Nirvana. Brought a tear to my eye…

Gonna watch it this weekend...

One of my Fav SD tracks - Michael McDonald on backing vocals, harmonizing with himself, plus a heck of a guitar solo by Jay Graydon. They had multiple guitarists cut solos. Jay said he didn't know his was used until he heard the song on the radio.

I love America and to me they are on the cusp of power soft, but a little too folk / freedom rock.

I'd agree on most of their songs, but You Can Do Magic....if that's not Yacht Rock, I don't know what is.

Strong entry. Have to leave Ventura Highway and Sister Golden Hair out.

A good way to distinguish -- would the song be more appropriate for a guitar and bonfire circle on the beach, or up on the deck of the beach house during a swingers party?

I didn't know Michael McDonald was in the Doobie Brothers.
McDonald was not an original member of the Doobie Brothers. He joined the band when Tom Johnston (primary vocalist) left for health reasons. The band went to a softer rock sound when McDonald joined. Johnston returned to the band when his health improved. McDonald left and the band went back to a harder rock sound.

As for how to define it, I agree with the lady who said "you know it when you hear it." But googling around, there are many lists out there that I don't necessarily agree with. Does "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" really belong?

I generally think of it as popular light R&B-ish music that came out between 1977 and 1982, wedged between disco and "classic" 80s rock.

Yacht Rock should be defined as - everyone knows the chorus, only a few people know the lyrics, but everyone can either air guitar it or air drum it while not spilling their cocktail out in the harbor.

Yacht Rock Revue is a fantastic show btw. They opened for Kenny Loggins a few years ago and they killed it.

My daughter watched about 90 seconds of it and came away with the gem of the evening, saying that when Stranger Things is over, they should have Finn Wolfhard start in as the lead guy in a Steely Dan movie.

Re: Yacht rock definition ...

Mellow, breezy sound. Lots of smooth jazz influences. Some similarities with smooth R&B but not overtly so. Strong hooks like pop music but more sophisticated chord progressions and arrangements.

Heavy on studio technique.

Not straight pop, and certainly not folk/country or hard rock.

My wife and I watched it and enjoyed it. It was great to see studio how inventive and flexible that professional studio musicians could be. I did appreciate this list they provided in the documentary...

https://www.yachtornyacht.com/ (sorry - saw it was already posted).

Add this to crossover country like Eddie Rabbit of the time, and it was just a pleasant era for music.

This was a suggested video for me after watching a YouTuber that talks guitar stuff.

These kids are really good. I'm impressed!

All of them are very talented. As a former trumpet player and Chuck Mangione fanboy, loved their Feels So Good rendition. Trumpet, Sax and Lead Guitar nailed the solos.

Turned on some more of those kids playing.

Around the 1:50:00 mark of that video. Easy Lover by Phil Collins and Phillip Bailey. Holy crap. That is ambitious but they do a good cover!

Ambitious yes.... and musically it is great. Trying to handle Phillip Bailey's high parts was a bridge too far but it is for almost anyone. Kudos for the attempt though.

One of the greatest songs of all time.

Haven't gotten around to watching this documentary yet, and I love this genre of music, but I just discovered yesterday that Toto, Christopher Cross, and Men at Work will be performing at Toyota Music Pavilion in Irving August 18th. Take my money now.

Ha. I hadn't gotten around to watching that either yet. But any time I see the names Phil and Phillip and the words Easy Lover together I get overly excited.
