Klaus on Netflix is really great, and puts a fairly original twist on a bit of a Santa origin story. My son is 7 and we've been watching it regularly for 2-3 years. I don't get tired of it, and it's kind of become a must watch in our house each year (often more than once).
Just watched this for the first time tonight. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Like you said, it's a fresh take on Santa, and I found it pretty moving.
I think it's the best animated Christmas movie for me, and not even close. Even starting to creep up into some of those real classic Christmas movies I grew up with.
Our son, who is now 10, loves this terrible movie called Alone for Christmas. It's Home Alone meets Homeward Bound done with minimal budget. My wife and I will put it on for him while we are playing cards with the family or something and he's laughing for 90 minutes.
