I assumed the premise can only be that Gollum steals a ballistic missile submarine and intends to defect to Valinor to punish Sauron for the death of his late wife.

Calling it now: the ending is a shot for shot remake of Rogue One's ending, but with Sauron trying to stop a Rivendell firework manufacturer from delivering their payload to Gandalf for Bilbo's birthday.

This Gen X nostalgia will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it.

When I was younger, Gen X would get a kick out of older generations' attachment to nostalgia. We always kind of laughed at it and found it a bit pathetic. Yet, here we are and Gen X is chugging down the nostalgia and pandering to greater degrees than the prior generations.

All the remakes and reboots. It's pretty weird and leaving us with crappy product.

The ease and the improvements of technology would have created more nostalgia opportunities for previous generations, no?

I'm dead center Gen X and proud of it.

I remember being mildly interested in the setting in Dirty Dancing, obsessed with ****ty Sandy in Grease, and curious about Twisted Sisters cover of "Leader of the Pack". Elvis was dead, and the three remaining Beatles were never to form again. The movie "Stand by Me", set in the 50s seemed like it could have been a modern movie, other than the reference to the song.

Fast forwad to the 2020s, and we still have Guns n Roses, Metallica, Sammy Hagar and AC/DC on tour. Mike Tyson is still fighting, the Rocky movies were never rebooted because they never stopped making new ones where Rocky wins in the end. A failed reboot of Karate Kid was forgotten, so we just caught up with Daniel-san as an adult, and college kids are having Cobra-Kai watch parties.

Dude, Generation X is NOT being nostalgic. Our pop culture just never died. Except the Goonies.... they died.

Honestly it feels like just a matter of time before a TV show is set in the Goon Docks. I would imagine Data and Sean Astin would be available but Brolin and Chunk may be a problem.

I thought The Goonies was actually getting remade or a sequel was planned.

And they'll probably have to come up with a lot of window dressing to fill out the story a bit.
But can we get 3 movies worth of window dressing?

We all watched Mike Tyson fight. We all listened to Phil Collins (strange that Jake Paul entered to In the Air Tonight when their has been 43 years of music to choose from, surely this generation could have produced something more representative of kids today?).

Here is the reference you were missing on this one

It's funny, I am watching scrubs right now, and it's amazing how much gen x nostalgia they pack in, half it probably isn't even gotten by half the people watching. The St. Ellsewhere doctors, growing pains references, men at work songs etc. we are a fairly nostalgic bunch, but it's natural to remember the happier times of your life wand the music/entertainment associated with it.

Gen Xers were the ones trying to revive Woodstock, though. Who do you think was attending Woodstock '94 and '99? Wasn't Boomers.

It was literally three boomers who put on Woodstock 94 and 99.

Michael Lang
John Roberts
Joel Rosenman

That's why I specifically said "Who do you think was attending". It was totally marketed for and aimed at Gen Xers.

Yes but it was revived by the boomers. We had tons of festival concerts in the 90s. We weren't clamoring for any of it out of nostalgia. We just wanted a good show and to have fun sex and drugs.
FIFY

Which is why Lang, Roberts, Rosenman knew they could sell it to Gen-X.

So Dazed and Confused was made in 1993 and set in 1976, 17 years earlier. If they made that movie today, it'd be set in 2008. Instead of bell-bottom jeans and halter tops, the girls would be in "apple bottom jeans" and the "boots with the fur." Instead of "Slow Ride" and "Hurricane," the soundtrack would be "Lollipop" by Lil Wayne and "I Kissed a Girl" by Katy Perry.
