From Matthew Belloni's newsletter tonight...

Quote:

Friday Night Lights and the Trump 2.0 bump: Trump's re-election and the rightward tilt of the country probably isn't great news for Aaron Sorkin's planned January 6th movie. But MAGA-friendlier projects could get a boost. Case in point: I'm told Universal TV has a bidding war going for a new Friday Night Lights reboot series with the original team of director Pete Berg, showrunner Jason Katims, and producer Brian Grazer all attached to return. They've talked before about getting the FNL gang back together, but this is a new project, TV only, and Katims is behind the pitch, according to two sources. It'll be different characters but still set in the world of Texas high school football (maybe the QB1 will demand an N.I.L. deal?). Three bidders thus far, so let's see if it lands at the home platform, Peacock, or if Netflix, which currently has the original series, or Amazon, or another platform, steps up.

"Reboot" might not be the exact right term, seeing as this could technically be set in the same Dillon Panthers timeline as the last series, just 20 years later. We'll have to wait and see...

As a huge fan of the film, and the subsequent tv series, we don't need this. It's ok to make another movie with Mark Wahlberg, Pete.

Warts and all, FNL is one of my favorite television shows, primarily because of the cast and the way the show portrayed Texas without mocking the people and the culture.

Seems like a big task to recreate that.

My favorite series of all time. Normally I would be against this, but hell it's been a couple of decades. Give me more! All in.

At the time of the original series, I lived in the same neighborhood as the houses of Coach, Riggins, the church, and a few other recurring setpieces.

This is the example of the IP that you can reuse. Between the book, movie, and series, they all were different levels of good with their own nuances. Going back to the well doesn't feel like an assault on the show.

Just give me Buddy Garrity still running the boosters.

And holy fck, I distinctly remember watching the pilot in 2006 from my desktop computer, bc NBC was streaming it online before they aired it. That that was 20 years ago doesn't seem real.

Given how many schools now play on Thursdays as well, the plot just writes itself.

Star WR is having trouble managing his instagram, football, and NIL responsibilities
QB gets knocked out and officials are trying to determine if they need to update targeting rules
Backup QB is also RB and DB. He's struggling to be the best player on the team at a new position while playing both ways and butting heads with the Diva WR
The helicopter parents and boosters start a fight over who should be playing
One kid still wears a facemask, aggravating his coaches and teammates
A recent election has half the team wearing one color sweat bands and half the team wearing another. They're both in the school colors so admin can't do anything about it
One kid brings his lunch everyday and the kids with cars laugh at him

Can we just rename all these shows from "reboot" to "lazy naked money grab"?

Is that what you would have called the show, based on a movie, based on a book, that didn't even recast the main actress?

Because that show was anything but lazy.

it would be much more interesting if the same actors from the original TV series are now adults back in the town and it's their kids on the team.

never understood how their careers worked out-

Taylor Kitsch was huge like 15 years ago then dropped off the planet

Plemons seems to be the biggest consistent star (who could have seen that one coming)

Michael B Jordan was a bit character and became massive star

QB1 and Matt Saracen dropped off the planet after this show.

Aimee Teegarden never did anything

Minka Kelly?!! aside from dating a New York Yankee what starring roles did she ever have?

of course it's the PARENTS that are the true long term stars.

Taylor Kitsch seems to be getting some TV work - he was pretty good in The Terminal List.

He was definitely groomed to be the next A-lister, but his first two big budget star vehicles were spectacular failures (John Carter and Battleship).

he'll have a solid career but never as the lead. nothing wrong with that

Idea: Billiy Riggins is the head coach of the Dillon Panthers.

I wouldn't call the QB1 of East Dillon with mommmy and girlfriend issues a bit player.

Also, you need to look at iMDB. Most of those actors have a solid career, just not superstar status. They stayed around the same level were. Just because you didn't watch it, doesn't mean they're not working and have a good career.

I don't want to live in a world where almost all of those characters ended up back together in Dillon.

Also- the thing that makes TV great is how some actors are perfectly perfect for certain roles, or how those roles morph from original conception to the actors themselves. So many great actors from great shows found lightning in a bottle but never again.

A couple of ideas:

Billy Riggins is the head coach.
Jason Street is a bit player, but an agent now for high school kids.
One of the kids he's going after is Billy's son, who is exactly like Tim.

The best part about Billy being the head coach is we know how fallable he is and just isn't a mature character when the show starts.

It's sounding more and more like this is, indeed, set in the same Dillon timeline, just 20 years later, so the door is certainly open for some of the old cast to return in cameos, guest appearances, etc.

Sounds to me like the perfect excuse to bring back Minka Kelly! BTW, these pics are all supposedly recent pics.

Oh, and GOTTA stick with the OG theme song. No remakes, no brand new theme. Strictly the original.

he was excellent in Terminal List

and he was excellent in Lone Survivor

but that is a few months of work over the last 20 years

i am sure he is a millionaire banging hot chicks so am not going to feel sorry for the guy but it's strange how Jesse Plemons the dorky player became a bigger star than the three main players in the show

but the great thing about fiction is they don't all have to have lived in Dillon

you could have the funeral of Coach, and they all come back and realize their mistakes blah blah blah

and so some of them were there the entire time and are in the community and others move back for new connections with the old cast like unrequitted love the first time

you can do a hundred concepts with that

I don't know if that's a positive or negative post about me, but I'll take it either way.
