Great idea, horrific execution. All over the place and Film noir efforts added nothing.

It's why it didn't win any awards or make any money.

Lots of good entries on here.

Why World War Z hasn't been made an anthology series yet is beyond me. That movie does not count.

They even had a decent main character arc that complimented the unusual circumstances. And that whole deal at the end with the producer chasing them was pointless. The movie was beautifully shot but the plot…..what a waste.

I thought it was one of the best films I have seen in years. That's the beauty of art and taste & preference.

The 1989 Batman. I saw it opening night thinking I was gonna get Batman Begins, but I got basically the original Adam West TV show with less lighting. Tim Burton pissed me off so much, that I still have never seen Batman Returns. The clip I saw with a bunch of penguins confirms that was the right decision.
The original Batman may very well have had some flaws, but it was nothing like the TV show. No campiness like the TV show. The penguins thing you mentioned in Batman Returns was the moment I checked out. The Joel Schumacher third and fourth movies were very much like the TV show.
The whole Jocker dancing to Prince is where I checked out of the first one. And I disagree about the campiness. For example, that 5 foot long barrel is every bit as campy as the original show.

The Joker's thing has been camp for decades. The "super serious" Joker is frankly boring.

"I am Legend". The film completely missed the whole point of the Novel. Plus it had some crappy CGI.

Lots of SciFi and Fantasy books that were made into bad movies belong on this list

Eragon and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen top the list for me off the top of my head.

I loved World War Z, the book.

World War Z the movie? I really liked. It's a fun sorta suspenseful unique movie. Other than a zombie outbreak there's not much in common with them.
Great post.

World War Z, the book, has a massive fan following and is genuinely a great read. Really outstanding story telling. In level with the first third of the Stand by King.

The movie isn't terrible but it does no justice to the book, not even close.

Jaws wasn't really a story about a shark. It was a story about a community faced with a huge problem their leaders refused to address until they couldn't. Then three men had to go out and address it.

Likewise, World War Z (the novel) isn't really about zombies. It's about what the global community would do when faced with actual extinction. Pretty sure that is why Brooks titled it that way (after WWII).

Always thought it would have been epic had HBO done it as a 10-12 episode single season series.

An episode per chapter (give or take) would have been amazing.

That character was definitely the worst part of the movie in my opinion. Not acted well at all, did not add anything. She felt like a Saturday morning cartoon villain.

This movie is a good nomination for this thread. Watched the movie once but don't care to see it again, even as an avid Beatles fan. Very weak plot points.

Nolan's Joker dressed in drag and performed a magic trick in front of mob bosses. Less camp? Sure. Super serious? Not in the least.

His entire personality in the movie was camp. Grittier, sure, but absolutely camp. The whole scene with the hospital was camp from the nurse outfit to having trouble detonating the explosives.

You keep proving my point. Nobody smart agrees with you. Look at the original TDK thread on TexAgs. Absolutely NOBODY calls it campy. Michael Caine famously forgot his lines when he first saw Heath Ledger as joker. Ledger won best supporting actor. He would have never won that if he was considered campy.

Fair. I mean, he did famously ask "why so serious?" right there in the movie.

Turned it into the most ****ty of rom-coms. That horribly unlikeable main character friend-zoned Lily James... what a chode.

I hated that movie.

It's literally written as a series a short stories woven together essentially. You would think it would be the easiest thing to adapt to a series/anthologies production. Angers me too.

My pick will be Dunkirk. I was fairly disappointed with it. Title of thread fits it perfectly. I love the idea of using as little digital help as possible but it completely failed to capture the epic story of what Dunkirk really was. Also the frequent and jarring time jumping was confusing as hell and frankly, unnecessary IMO.

I can see that about Dunkirk. Heck, at the time it was out, I knew that was going to be a common criticism of the movie. Having said that, I loved the movie for that unique approach to telling its story. It was micro-focused on that handful of characters, and so the result was it didn't seem to capture the true story of Dunkirk. Of course, that is one of WWII's most impressive stories with the brigade of private boats crossing the Channel to extract upwards of 200K Allied soldiers. It's a shame that the movie didn't convey just how important that was.

On a more personal level, I will say that this movie factors into one of my two biggest regrets with my dad. Other than Texas Aggie football, going to the movies was the thing my dad and I did consistently together throughout my life. In 2017, I had no way to know that he was soon to pass away. This was the last movie that he and I saw. He fell asleep during the movie and later claimed it sucked. (The reason that I celebrated so loudly with the victories over Auburn at Kyle Field in 2021 and 2023 was the last time my dad and I went to Kyle Field together was the Auburn game in 2017).

It's what happens when we're used to books being made into 6-10 episode TV shows and then they try to squeeze it all into 2 hours.

Very few movies can do a book justice.

They could've done the back stories on all the kids. Ender, Bean, Bonzo... the locke and forgot who his brother was on the internet.

Just my $.02.

They could've done flashbacks to the first bugger war.

Big Dunkirk fan here. Just didn't get hyped or loved I think because a lot of the general public came out to see it (that may not normally go see all Nolan movies) and thought it was going to be a big war movie, instead of the micro-war movie that it was.
