Now this is how you do a teaser trailer.

For a movie that a number of critics are comparing to The Godfather, There Will Be Blood, and Oppenheimer in terms best-of-the-century American epics.

With Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce apparently locks for Oscar nominations.

Currently at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Brutalist hits theaters on December 20th and I cannot wait...

Quote:

Escaping post-war Europe, visionary architect Laszlo Toth (Adrien Brody) arrives in America to rebuild his life, his work, and his marriage to his wife Erzsebet after being forced apart during wartime by shifting borders and regimes. On his own in a strange new country, Laszlo settles in Pennsylvania, where the wealthy and prominent industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce) recognizes his talent for building. But power and legacy come at a heavy cost...

Loved Vox Lux. Will be watching just because I became a fan of the director.

As for the trailer, I guess I'm not seeing what's so incredible about it. Saw it earlier today and it didn't particularly stand out to me, other than I appreciate when trailers don't give away the entire plot.

- The cinematography
- The awesome graphic design and the way it's superimposed over the imagery
- The way the imagery + the graphic design all slowly scrolls from right to left
- The sound design
- The incredible score

... the second and third bullet points being things I've literally never seen in a trailer before. If you don't recognize the uniqueness of those elements, and how this looks/feels different than just about every teaser trailer ever, I don't know what else to you.

Wolf Man teaser trailer did it a couple months ago. Not that I liked that trailer.

Agree that the cinematography and score both stand out though.

But those hyperbolic tweets are way over-the-top. It's hard to take any tweet seriously these days.

This?

You think these two trailers are similar?

My point was that graphics superimposed over the trailer is hardly unique. A bunch of the Alien trailers did it pretty famously before.

It's a cool enough trailer.

Not combined with the scrolling element, which is the key aspect that sets it apart. Along with just about everything else that's a massive step up in quality. But whatever.

I agree with TCTTS. This trailer is a breath of fresh air, and beautifully crafted and certainly not something I've seen before.

As for the movie subject, I hope they cover when he decides to design A&M's campus.

It was visually cool, but I didn't realize scrolling text was that imaginative. And I know it's just a teaser, but make me interested in the story...and anticipating the actual trailer/movie. I still have zero clue what the movie's about, or if I care about seeing it.

The score was awesome though.

You're not alone. The score was good and I guess it was well-done, but I didn't see anything that justified the masturbatory awe some of those tweets implied. Then again, I'm a certified cretin.

Yeah, it's nothing against the trailer, it's just how hyperbolic those tweets are. "Film Twitter" these days is a bunch of Letterboxed nerds tripping over themselves seeing who can be more effusive in their praise.

Or… they can also be genuine expressions of excitement for/love of great movies, which some here simply may not share/relate to, and that's totally fine. Yes, a number of reactions feel over-the-top at times, but chalking them all up to hyperbole and one-up-manship is just as reductive. Personally, I watch that teaser and get more excited than I am for most blockbusters. I've watched it at least a dozen times in the past 24 hours, due to something it sparks inside me. I then choose to express that excitement on a message board, while those guys choose to express their excitement on Twitter. It's not all performative and attention-grabbing. Some of us really are genuinely moved by this stuff.

I get it, and I don't meant to sound like I'm casting aspersions. I imagine that the trailer has something in it that speaks to (and I use this term with all respect) film dorks but doesn't really get normies going.

And that's completely understandable. I share not to shame, just to make people aware of its existence and the buzz it's receiving from a certain sect of film-goers.

Just secured one of four early IMAX tickets left for next Wednesday night. That said, it looks like it's expanding to additional IMAX theaters in the weeks to come, where/when it can be squeezed in around Mufasa. All in addition to what sounds like a platform release in standard theaters (i.e. a gradual, limited to wide release) beginning next Thursday/Friday...

Anytime I see that much nonsense from "Film Twitter" it makes me immediately doubt the quality of the movie.

It's not just "Film Twitter," though. After 77 reviews, it's currently at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Sure, there will be detractors, but movies with scores this high are rarely just hype.

In the past 15 years I've read the "shaking" thing once, maybe twice ever. I swear, this board's opinions of critic reactions have become more exaggerated than the claims of the reactions themselves.

When I first heard about this movie I thought it sounded super boring and I get the annoying over-the-top critic gushing tropes that some have mentioned. A friend wouldn't shut up about how great it was going to be despite having never seen anything, and just going off of twitter and critics rumblings...

But after finally watching the trailers today, I think it looks incredible. Really does look like a true epic that we haven't seen since There Will Be Blood.

And I'm with TC that the teaser trailer was fantastic.

Looking in DFW, am I correct in seeing that the Lion King CGI movie is getting all the IMAX screens instead of The Brutalist on opening weekend? Does that make it unlikely that this will get many, if any, IMAX showings?

This coming Wednesday will be the first and last IMAX showings of the year, playing only in NY and LA. It's just a one-night, two-city thing. Then, starting the next day with Mufasa, yeah, it looks like Disney will have their traditional holiday monopoly on all IMAX screens for probably the next couple weeks or so after that. (Seriously, Disney doesn't allow any other movies to show in IMAX during certain runs, to the point where theaters won't receive the movie from Disney at all if they don't comply.) After that, however, according to the Variety announcement, The Brutalist "will then expand to IMAX screens across the U.S. throughout January." I image Mufasa will still take up a decent amount of IMAX screens at that point, but it sounds like The Brutalist will increasingly push its way onto as many IMAX screen as it can get, week by week, likely starting the first or second weekend of January.
