It's a testament to George Clooney that he was able to still have a career after this movie.
There's lot of stuff written about how only Clooney's ascendant star power let him have a movie career immediately after Batman and Robin, easily a worst 5 movie I've ever paid to go see.

The tale of the tape after Batman and Robin came out in 1997 for the major players

Arnold: End of Days (1999), the 6th Day (2000), Collateral Damage (2002), Terminator 3 (2003)

Chris O'Donnell (I have never heard of any of these movies): Cookie's Fortune (1999), The Bachelor (1999), Vertical Limit (2000), 29 Palms (2002). He finally caught on Grey's Anatomy for a few epsiodes in 2006 and parlayed that into a very long career on NCIS Los Angeles from 2009-2023.

Uma: Gattaca came out the same year as B&R, followed by Les Mis (1998), The Avengers (not that one, 1998), Sweet and Lowdown (1999), Vatel (2000), The Golden Bowl (2000). Took her until Kill Bill in 2003 to get back to being famous.

Alicia Silverstone - who one of my classier friends kept yelling "She's so fat!" in her Batgirl suit during the movie: Excess Baggage (1997), Blast from The Past (1999), Love's Labour's Lost (2000), Rock My World (2002).

Clooney: The Peacemaker (1997), Out of SIght (1998), the Thin Red Line (1998), South Park (1999), Three Kings (1999), O Brother Where rt Thou (2000) - Sum***** is Teflon.

I saw it in theater as a 9 year old. Loved it then and it still holds up.

I freaking HATED this movie. I was so excited to see it and saw it opening night. I thought I was gonna get Batman Begins but I got Edward Scissorhands in a bat suit. The only movie prior that I was more disappointed in was Superman 3.

That started my long hate affair with Tim Burton.

Christmas 1988, I was eight years old and I remember my grandparents taking me, my sister, and a cousin to see The Land Before Time at our local theater. After the movie we were waiting in the lobby for my grandma to use the bathroom, I looked across the way, and saw the poster below on the wall. But it was far enough away that at first I didn't recognize what I was looking at. What I initially saw was an orange, open mouth with two top orange teeth and four bottom orange teeth. I remember starring at it, wondering what in the world it was for - then, like one of those hidden 3D stereograms that were so popular back then, my eyes/brain suddenly adjusted, I realized it was the BAT SYMBOL, that a Batman movie was coming out that summer, and I damn near lost my mind. I excitedly pointed it out to my granddad, who would not care less, but that was the first time I ever remember being truly excited for a movie that far in advance, based only on a single poster, and for the next six months I was absolutely obsessed...

The number of dudes walking around with the Batman symbol shaved into their heads was crazy.
Hype was insane in 1989, and that was way before social media.

Sip band did a Batman halftime show and they formed a giant bat symbol on the Kyle Field right before the Ags beat them.

The movie needed a little more exploring of Batman's development instead of one flashback, and it mishandled the scene where Vicky Vale shows up in the Batcave and isn't the least surprised. Had those two aspects been done effectively, I'd rank the film among the best I've ever seen. It definitely has immense entertainment value.

Christmas 88, one of my parents gave me a Batman T-shirt that I wore almost religiously for the next several months. It was a simple black shirt with essentially the poster art on it, just not as stylized as it is on the poster. A gal that I had done several group projects with in a couple of Bana courses asked me what the heck this was supposed to be. Knew right then and there she wasn't wife material as I had to explain it to her.

And I stand by both. This movie sucked, as did Elizabethtown, First Man, Transformers 1-145, and pretty much every other movie I can think of that you pumped here.

Except Top Gun, but everybody was pumping that one, not just you.

Ha, nice. I had that exact same shirt. Then we forgot sunscreen one day at the pool and my mom made me wear that shirt to swim in instead and the chlorine turned the black grey. I was so pissed.

I also really, really wanted the Batman shoes, which were basically just Converse with the Bat symbol all over them. But my dad thought they looked "like something skaters would wear" and wouldn't let me get them.

Batman is great because it has the greatest actor of our time in it - William Hootkins.

He played:

Porkins:

Dr. Zarkov's assistant in Flash Gordon

The dude that says "Top Men" in Raiders

Lt Eckhardt in Batman

Even crazier, he was born in Dallas and was interviewed by the FBI in 1963 because he was a student of Ruth Paine - his Russian teacher at St. Mark's. Paine had a houseguest named Marina Oswald and her 3 kids at the time when Oswald shot Kennedy.

He also was in the same high school acting troupe as Tommy Lee Jones in high school, attended Princeton, was fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and trained as an actor at LAMDA.

I have the entire film score sitting on my desk right now. There's a lot in it that is really well done and it was a defining moment for Danny Elfman as a film composer.

I agree. I remember being in grad school at Wehner and one of the PhD grad students was jamming that in his office background. Maybe 2001 timeframe and I still thought that was a really cool setup

His defining moment was Pee Wee's Big Adventure!

Kim Basinger was THE bomb. 21 year old me would have killed to be with her in 1989.

I was 5 when this movie came out in 1989 and my parents took me to see it on opening night because I was obsessed with Batman. It is probably the first movie I can remember seeing in theaters.

I was fully dressed in my Batman costume for the event and the guy from Channel 2 news was there covering opening night and decided to interview me for the news. My parents called a friend beforehand and they recorded it on VHS for us. I have to imagine my parents still have that VHS.

Still love this movie and it is by far my favorite of the Batman feature films.

Born in '87, so I grew up with this movie and Batman: The Animated Series. Was one of probably 10 total movies we had on VHS, and I wore that tape out.

I still remember my dad taking me to the theatre to see Batman Returns.

Even though Batman is my childhood, I still put The Dark Knight, The Batman, and Batman Begins over it.

I probably would have been one of the people with the Batman shaved into my hair but my parents wouldn't let me. I remember being disappointed with that decision at the time.

When you go pimping movies that totally bomb at the box office and make the news for being a failure it comes with the territory

What is your deal?

I haven't come at you in any way - I had never even seen you post on this site until a couple days ago - and this is now back-to-back threads now where you're ****-talking me today, completely unprovoked.

Also, I "pimp" countless movies here, and some of those are bound to bomb from time to time. We're talking opinions, after all, and I've never claimed to be Nostradamus. Still, funny how you're not acknowledging the many I've been "right" about, and way ahead of the curve.
