How long do you want to ignore this user?
Stumbled upon that new sitcom last night. HULU.

A&M reference in the first few minutes of Episode 2.

Thought I'd share.

Finally had a chance to knock out the first two episodes (the third one drops Tuesday on Hulu) and IMO it's pretty great. I love the characters so far - the faculty cast is fun, while the students so far are hilariously deadpan - and I laughed multiple times throughout.

That, and not only is there an A&M reference in the first two episodes, the main character says he WENT to A&M (while the show takes place in Austin). What's even funnier is that he's gay and it's implied that his drag queen friend went to A&M as well. I laugh only because it's as if the writers frequented this very board and designed a show specifically to try and piss off a certain TexAgs contingent.

Seriously, though, the "woke-ness" is so self-aware/tongue-in-cheek, and used almost exclusively for laughs, that I can't imagine anyone having a problem with it (though I'm sure some will take me up on that challenge). Yes, it's definitely written by liberal writers, and "conservatives" are name-dropped a few times, but the writers do such a great job of mocking the entire discourse, and laughing at themselves at well, that you can't help but enjoy it.

Anyway, it's definitely worth a shot. The episodes are less than half-an-hour each, and with only eight total it's going to be a quick, easy watch over the next five weeks or so...

Dude, you just threw down the gauntlet and issued a challenge to about half a dozen posters on this board. They weren't even aware of this show before now, but you can bet they're going to hate watch every last episode and post about it now. You thought The Acolyte thread was active? You have no idea what you've just done.

We've enjoyed it. Funny to hear some many Austin and A&M references regularly. They nailed the dynamic between the surrounding Austin suburbs and Austin ISD too. Filmed the whole show out here in Atlanta apparently.

Also zero chance (literally) that y'all won't purposely try to bait and antagonize the same contingent of posters you claim to loathe from posting on this thread (5 of 8 above posts say I'm right).

LOL.

I like the interaction with the PE teacher/Coach and the English teacher.

"Hey Fruit Loop!"

"You can't call me that."

"It's just cereal."

"Then call me Cheerios."

"There's nothing gay about Cheerios, Fruit Loop."

liberal writers can write good content that conservatives like myself enjoy....

exhibit A: Last Man Standing

saw the trailers for this show and while i pretty much don't watch any TV this does seem like it was going to be a well written show and enjoyable for the masses

Loud noises!

True story, I worked at Schulman 6 for a couple of years while I was at A&M. There was a guy there who we found out was gay. We found out because his boyfriend kept coming to the theater to hang out with the dude. I overheard a conversation between these two where the boyfriend said his biggest dream was to get with a Corps guy. I don't remember if I vomited before or after I laughed my ass off.

To each their own, even if it's a comedy and well written, I've heard enough about "wokeism" from both sides to last a lifetime. I watch entertainment specifically in part to get away from that whole conversation and other annoying real life issues.
But enjoy.

LOL.

Ain't nobody trying to bait no one.

I was simply/jokingly trying to get ahead of the inevitable thread on this board or the other, whining about a gay Aggie character on a "woke" show, inevitably piled on by further complaints by a bunch of people who haven't and will never even lay eyes on the show.

To that end, just to be 100% crystal clear... this show isn't any more "woke" than something like Modern Family. In the same way that show was in on the gag, and mocked its own characters, the discourse, etc, this one is doing the exact same thing. Again, thematically, it's not preachy at all, and the one character who is depicted as somewhat preachy (the main character) is basically relentlessly made fun of, in hilarious fashion, by colleagues and students alike.

It's just a funny, charming show, one that centers around "woke" elements, without actually being "woke," if that makes sense.

Episode four was hilarious.

It's too bad certain people here aren't watching, because this show really does do a great job at walking the "woke" line while also mocking/challenging its gay, liberal lead, tonight being the perfect example. It's also impressive how it can take a subject like gun violence and approach it with laughs, without feeling crass or in bad taste. The gay stuff is definitely going to turn off some folks regardless, but personally I'm loving the overall vibe and am really impressed with how fair/nuanced it is - something so many often complain Hollywood never is.

I think the main reason people aren't watching has nothing to do with it being woke or not. It's because it's on Hulu. It seems like Hulu shows get about one twentieth the viewership of Netflix or HBO.

I agree with the above. I think it has to do with being packaged with D+. We sh** canned all of that. Not because of "woke" because SW and MCU just suck now.

edit

we're still onboard with Netflix, dropped DirecTv (finally *********it), went with YouTube Tv, and have Paramount, Prime, and something else my wife watches sh** on. Anyway, just seems like Hulu content is subpar

Technically, since you have YouTubeTV, you have FX. Just the live/on-demand version, without certain streaming perks (like 4K). So in that sense you don't really need a Hulu subscription.

I still can't tell if this is a parody making fun of being woke or of it's trying to push an agenda. It's hilarious, either way.

This, to me, is the brilliance of it.

The main character clearly has an agenda, is "woke," etc... but then the show itself is constantly making fun of him through all the other characters, putting his hypocrisy front and center, etc. The latter of which was made crystal clear by having him actually love shooting a gun in the final seconds of the last episode.

While I think the writers, or at least a chunk of them, are most likely anti-gun, pro-drag queen, etc, etc, I also think they're self-aware and self-deprecating enough to know that the most vocal of those positions can be endlessly annoying and often hypocritical at times.

I just looked up the bio for Brian Jordan Alvarez - the star, writer, and creator of the show - and he was born in New York, raised in Tennessee, and went to college at USC in LA. In other words, he's navigated/has roots in both worlds, which makes perfect sense, and is almost assuredly what lends to the show's "both sides" sensibilities.

The bit about the main writer makes sense.

There is actually three levels being represented in the show.

The woke, gay main character.
The far from woke PE coach.
The middle ground of the students and other teachers.

Two loud voices representing the edges, and several not so loud voices creating the balance.

It works well.

I'm clearly in the minority of the people on this thread, but I just finished the first episode and didn't really find it funny. Maybe it gets better later, but I mostly just found the main guy annoying. In general, I don't really like shows where actors just spit out lines as fast as they can. I feel like he is one of those kids of actors.
