I had a 15 hour flight to Dubai and since I cannot sleep decided on a John Cazale movie marathon to pass the time.

He made every role he was in stand out, and brought such depth to every character. His arc as Fredo in the Godfather specifically, you can see how he turns against the family due to his own insufficiencies and insecurities; and he makes them so believable.

His performance in the deer hunter, while not a leading role, was so powerful given that he had terminal cancer the entire shoot, and passed away before he was able to see the completed film.

What a talent, I am so sad he died at the age of 42, what a career he would have had.

He was smart, not dumb like everyone says

I would have loved to see River Phoenix trajectory

Philip Seymour Hoffman may be a contender here too. For me at least.

Agreed. From Twister to the serious stuff he was great. He also was so good comedically. Phenomenal in Along Came Polly and introduced the world to a new term (at least popularized it).

Mine is John Candy. I just liked his movies.

Deer Hunter while good was also depressing. My dad is a Vietnam vet so maybe it bugged me more than it should have.

This December it will be 27 years since Farley died at 33. I don't know how much staying power he would have had, but he made me laugh.

Hartman died at age 49 not much after that. And I still think of the story of Jon Lovitz beating up Andy (RIchard) over giving Hartman's wife cocaine after she had been off it for a while.
