How do you define Classic Rock?

Certainly this is just a sign of me being old, but I don't really think of Nirvana or Pearl Jam as Classic Rock. To me, Classic Rock is more than just old rock songs. It's a specific type of rock music, mostly from the 60s to the 70s, starting around the time of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and ending some time in the late 70s. I think there have been some more recent "Classic Rock" bands, like The Black Crowes, that have the same sound and can probably fall into that category. I feel like Nirvana is distinctly Grunge, though, and to me it has a very different sound. I wouldn't consider them to be Classic Rock any more than I would consider Elvis (who is "Oldies"). Beyond that, I've heard bands like REM on "Classic Rock Radio" and they are certainly not classic rock. Do others feel this way, or is this just me being old?

GN'R is another one of those bands that I feel like has some of the classic rock sound. Not fully, but it doesn't bother me hearing them called Classic Rock.

And oddly, Pearl Jam's later stuff has more of a Classic Rock sound to it than their earlier stuff.

It seems like the lable Classic Rock is mostly being used by radio stations and or streaming platforms and what they mean by it is merely "rock music for dudes who are older than 35". I don't think calling it Classic Rock can really have any stylistic meaning or describe how it sounds. For that I think you have to use a more specific genre term - surf rock, progressive rock, etc.

Rock from bands who played early 70s-mid 80s. That isn't the cut off for their musical output, but the band needed to have played in that era.

LZ obviously had earlier music. So did Pink Floyd. Rush has tons out music they produced after that. But they played in that window. The Stones may have just released Hackney Diamonds but they are still a classic rock band.

To me those bands are my classic rock bands. They are the bands I grew up listening to originally from when I started listening through college.

Video compilation of the number one song every month since 1980. Plays a few second clip of each song.

Where classic rock ends is somewhere in this video.

I don't think there is any real definition of what iclassic rock is and it's probably different for every person. Growing up, I always thought of classic rock as mid 60s to early 80s with the rise of hair bands being the stopping point.

I'll broadly define Classic Rock as everything from the Beatles through Mr Big and Extreme, the last two 80s bands to have any 80s influence before Nirvana ended 80s rock and created the Grunge / 90s rock era.

A few years ago I overhead a 22-year old girl that worked for me telling someone "I've really been into oldies lately, stuff like Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys".

Same. Classic rock had that certain sound/vibe. Which definitely went poof with hair bands.

What's interesting is categorizing bands that crossed the "timeline", like Aerosmith. Certainly Dream On, etc. are considered classic rock, but Love in an Elevator not so much.

Back in the '90s, I played in a band that performed a lot of pop-style songs from the '60s and '70s, things like "Louie, Louie," "The Letter," "Doggone," "Never Been To Spain," etc.

A young woman I worked with wanted to see our set list. She looked it over, looked up at me with a blank expression, and said: "I've never heard of any of these songs."

I was crushed.

Aerosmith was classic rock then they went on a hiatus. Then the came back with the album Dude looks like a lady and they became a hair band.

Classic rock is all the rock I listened to through college and everything before that time. Everything since just isn't as good.

It also aligns with how people view SNL (it was best when I was in HS, everything before that seems overrated, and it hasn't been as funny since).

It also aligns with pro sports. I started watching my favorite player sometime before I graduated HS, and all these guys since just don't get it.

My idea of classic rock pretty much aligns with everything they play on Sirius Classic Vinyl and most of what they play on Classic Rewind.

"Dream On" Aerosmith = classic rock
"Walk this Way" = not classic rock (but still awesome)

Early classic rock is the Stones's first albums, Cream, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Hendrix.
Middle classic rock is Boston, Doobie Bros., Steve Miller, etc.
Late classic rock is young Van Halen, ACDC.

Hair bands, Metallica, grunge, GnR are not classic rock.

Why would you say "Walk this Way" is not classic rock? Or are you only referring to the Run DMC collab?

It totally depends on your age. Anything from 1955 to 1979 is classic rock, to me, since I'm an old now.

Not until the Stones or Who or Zeppelin did it become classic rock. Prior to that, it was so different.

Beatles early stuff is pop and not classic rock.

Classic rock: rock music made in 1974, +/- about ten years.

My own:
50s - oldies
60s-early 80s - classic
80s-early 90s - hair band but some of this can be lumped with classic

However you lump those, grunge was definitely the end.

what about Van Halen? Would 1984 be considered classic rock? All albums before that I think are.

That's tough call but going with Van Halen as classic rock.
