I've never really watched Anime but thinking of giving it a shot. I watched some of Attack on Titan and liked it but I forgot where I stopped. I need to pick up where I left off. What are some series that you suggest I check out?

I was always big on any type of Gundam Wing series. Lot of stuff has been out since then though.

I am not a huge anime guy, but I watched Cowboy Bebop and it's legitimately one of the best things I've ever seen.

Not a series but same with Akira. It's amazing and a must-see film.

+1 on Cowboy Bebop and Gundam
For kids, definitely Pokemon

Cowboy Bebop is the only anime I've been able to watch past 3 episodes.

For movies: Akira, Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell and Grave of Fireflies are all good.

Cowboy Bebop
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War (you need some background into the series before watching it; the original anime is good but has a lot of filler)

First of all, Here's my shameless anime thread, got a lot of good conversations there.

For any beginners I would recommend the following:
Cowboy Bebop
Full metal alchemist brotherhood
Death note
Attack on titan
Code geass

these are all great shows that are really just exceptionally well written stories regardless of medium. I've gotten to where I watch more anime than American media because they still live by the old emphasis of story telling, to tell a good story. Maybe it's that I'm not from that country, so I miss any political messaging but my main like of it is that the vast majority of the shows are simply trying to entertain and any questions they make you think are more philosophical than trying to force any political message down your throat. It is really quite nice not being forcibly subjected to political messaging.

I have more suggestions after you've seen the above, but I would highly recommend watching all of the list above first.

Naruto is what got me hooked. My boys convinced me to give a try and I've watched every episode, movie and spin off. Such great characters even if it's cheesy at times.

I also like Demon Slayer.

Akira is the beginning and end of Anime for me. It blew my mind when I saw that for the first time.

But, for an Anime series Cowboy Bebop stands above the rest, and it's 2nd overall if you combine movies and series. Some of the best music ever in TV, great characters, great story build and amazing story arc with the rare understanding of how to end it and not give in when fans ask for more.

Alternate opinion - Cowboy Bebop is overrated. It's just fine.

Art may be a highly subjective thing but you're unquestionably wrong and possibly a communist.

What genres of shows/movies do you like? That can make a difference. Steins;gate is amazing but if you aren't a sci-fi fan and don't want to have to think a little it won't be for you.

Castlevania on Netflix was great, I really enjoyed that one. Nocturne is decent, but not as good as the original Castlevania. Demon Slayer has been a lot of fun, I like that one too. I don't know whether or not it qualifies as anime but Arcane is really well done too.

Is there an anime that avoids that standard anime dialogue that has to over explain everything that's happening? The lack of subtext or nuance in the writing of the animes i've briefly seen are just too much for me to get into them. You could literally cut out 40% of the dialogue, and you wouldn't miss anything.

I don't know if it's just a cultural thing or a staple of the medium, but it has been something I can't get into. It's a shame, because i've heard some of the story telling is spectacular. I also can't stand watching a 20-minute fight scene; I get bored to tears.

I think the only anime I have watched and actually enjoyed was Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

I loved the American adaptation of the original series from the 70's. The 2013 remake Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (season 1) and 2202 (season 2) is fantastic.

The most popular stuff is going to tend to be geared towards a younger crowd and they are not likely to have any subtlety or nuance.

I'd say any of the below fit the small criteria you mentioned.
Death Note
Odd Taxi
Pluto
Monster
Paranoia Agent
Steins;Gate
Terror in Resonance
Psycho Pass season 1
Heavenly Delusion

Star Blazers and Battle of the Planets.

Yeah I know I'm old but thanks KTVT Channel 11 in the DFW area for introducing me to both of them when I was a kid because I still love them.

A great one to get started is Castlevania on Netflix. That is amazing. The Nocturne one is garbage so don't watch it because the writer for the first one didn't write the second.

Another one on Netflix is Cyberpunk Edgerunners. It is so good that it helped get people back into the videogame Cyberpunk 2077.

Watch My Hero Academia. Set in a world where almost everyone has superpowers, this series follows a young boy without powers who still dreams of becoming a hero. It's filled with action, character development, and inspiring moments.

I Googled this and saw that it won a bunch of awards and RT liked it, so I started it last night. It's pretty fun.

Also I think this may be the only time I've enjoyed an English dubbed version over the original language with subtitles. The toons' mouths don't move in coordination with the voice over, so it's not distracting and the English version was surprisingly more enjoyable and well done.

Thanks for the rec.

Would Japanese animated films count here, or just series? If so, start with some Studio Ghibli:

My Neighbor Totoro
Grave of the Fireflies
Whisper of the Heart
The Secret World of Arrietty

Not necessarily Anime, but my daughter loves Anime and I watched this show with her and it was anime-adjacent. It was fantastic! It's 3d animation and it's gorgeous. And it won a Golden Globe.
Arcane on Netflix. Season two starts in November.

Also an easy watch for a newcomer is Haikyu!! Volleyball sports anime. Both dub and sub are good.

Except that it's a western show, so extremely different from anime. The only thing they have in common is they are both animated. Arcane is extremely well written, voice acted, and animated.

I enjoyed Sturgill Simpson's anime. It's on Netflix.

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt10682000/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk

No dialogue, it's basically a 40 minute anime music video set to his rock album.

Same:

He sat on this album for a year while anime teams in Japan created the anime to accompany it.
