Howdy friends,

I watched RRR, from India, over the weekend and loved it. It was on IGN's top-20 action movies list but I wasn't expecting a 3-hour period piece drama, over-the-top stylish action and a freakin Oscar-winning musical performance halfway through. Ridiculous but fantastic. I'll recommend it to anyone. First Indian movie I've seen.

Then I watched Wolf Warrior 2, from China, which is one of the highest grossing Chinese films of all time. It was decent, like a Chinese Rambo 2. Good action though.

I've seen a handful of kung fu movies, Kurosawa films, etc but I generally don't see too many international films in any given year.

What are some of your favorites? Any recommendations?

If you're looking to stick with the action theme, I second Crouching Tiger - fantastic movie.

I'll add Train to Busan ( Korean zombies )

If action isn't a requirement, then I recommend Amelie ( French )

City of God should be a top 3 recommendation for anyone and everyone in this thread (or any other thread) who hasn't already seen it. Of the best movies of the last 25 years regardless of language or genre.

Both are two of the best films of the 21st century. The Lives of Others won the Oscar for best foreign film. It is absolutely incredible.

All Bollywood movies have a dance scene - even serious military movies.

Here are some of my Bollywood favorites that I've either caught on an airplane or seen in a theater.

Airlift - about the Indian workers stuck in Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion in August 1990. A true story although the lead is a composite character (it was two guys in real life)

Neerja - true story about the Indian PanAm Flight attendant who protected Americans from Pakistani Muslim hijackers

Go Goa Gone - just a fun comedy about young tech bros and a fake Russian zombie hunter

Hotel Mumbai - great movie based on a true story

Subedar Joginder Singh - true story based on one of their highest medal winners in the Sikh Regiment during the war between India and China.

A year or so ago, the wife brought this movie home from the library:

Nil Battey Sannata

It's a Bollywood production about a mom who does everything to ensure a better life for her daughter through academic achievement. Of course the kid rebels, but ultimately mom's efforts work out for the best for the kid. This was a surprisingly emotional movie.

Thirded, and if you liked it, follow up with Hero.

Also if you're a fan of those Hitler reaction memes, give Downfall a try.

The reaction video when Hitler finds out A&M is going to the SEC is excellent.

Another vote for Crouching Tiger.

For more kung fu, I also enjoy the early Jackie Chan movies like Police Story and Drunken Master.

I don't know if it's just the ones I've seen, but has anyone noticed that Korean movies can get pretty twisted?

Oldboy: fantastic but ****ed up
Sympathy for Mr Vengeance: kinda just ****ed up, didn't enjoy this one
Squid Game: TV show but ****ed up
The Man from Nowhere: not too wild but it does involve organ harvesting
Train to Busan: fantastic but ****ed up zombie movie
Parasite: good, gets kind of wild

Can't recall if I've seen others but 6-for-6 is pretty intense! I guess I should have watered it down with some K-pop or something, presumably nobody gets their eyes removed and sold in those.
