I'm not that big of a fan of Nolan.

So for me yes. He passed Nolan easily.

Started reading this thread yesterday, watched Sicario for the first time tonight. So good. I didn't know he also directed Arrival. I don't know when I'm going to get the chance to see Dune 2, but I can't friggin wait.

I know Oppenheimer is primed to win Best Picture in a few days, but Villeneuve just moved into the number 1 spot for my Active Working Directors Power Rankings. I'd say Nolan lucked out with Dune: Part 2 getting delayed.

Honestly same for me. Nolan is bipolar for me. I either love his stuff or really don't. Example. Interstellar and Inception? Fantastic movies. Tenet and Dunkirk? Huge misses for me. Especially Dunkirk. Was actually rather disappointed for that one.

While everything I have seen from DV has been really solid to incredible. DV wins hands down IMveryhumbleO

This is exactly my feelings. I absolutely love The Prestige and Interstellar but then a lot of his more recent stuff just falls flat for me. I have not found a DV movie yet that I didn't love.

Nah, Oppenheimer would beat Dune: Part Two in a head to head with the Academy. A character study on a physicist opening with the same exact box office as a sci-fi epic? We all know Oppenheimer was a huge hit, but it wasn't expected to be that big and is a huge success story. Dune: Part Two is a success but it's performing at expectations right now.

I do think Dune: Part Two is the Oscar front runner for 2024, and given the whole year it has to sit with audiences, it may win. The religious themes in it are surprisingly the main focus of the movie and very relevant to all that is going on in the world now.

I'm working with a writer on a TV project, who became friends with Villeneuve through the writer's Canadian wife (she's a lawyer who ran in the same circles as Villeneuve back when she lived in Canada). And spring 2022, the writer sent Villeneuve a draft of our pilot, on somewhat of a whim, after Villeneuve asked him what he was working on the last time they were together at some party. The writer didn't send as an inquiry for Villeneuve to direct or anything like that, just more as an "I'd love to hear your thoughts if you ever get the chance" kind of thing. Well, within, like, three days, while he was doing preproduction on Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve read the pilot and sent the writer a really encouraging email, which he then shared with me and the other producers. I can't tell you how rare that is, and ever since then I've not only loved Villeneuve as a director, but as a person too. He really does seem like such a good person.

(In addition to having helped shaped the story of that pilot, I did the cover art for it as well, so just knowing Villeneuve saw even that was pretty cool too, if I do say so myself.)

Gotta love folks that don't let popularity and fame change them. Or a degree.

As for the thread title, I look forward to DV movies much more than CN ones these days.

Such a good book.

God, I hope it does not get the "World War Z" treatment.

I want it be an abridged version of the whole series, then to get the 2001 treatment and just be weird as all get out at the end.

INTENSIFIES...

Pretty cool hearing about stuff like this, about someone who is brilliant and incredibly successful AND super busy. Says a lot about his character. I have heard pretty cool things about Nolan, but that's next level.

Both seem like extremely high-IQ guys, but pretty down to earth.

Denis Villeneuve says more with a single frame/shot with zero dialogue than Christopher Nolan does with a movie that is 70% exposition disguised as intelligent dialogue (looking at you Inception).

DV is that guy. Get with the times, folks.

Not really impressed with Nolan's last few films. Dunkirk, Oppenheimer and the backwards movie were all 'meh' to me.

Backwards movie?

Nolan did a movie about the Seinfeld episode where they went to India?

Finally saw BR2049. Pretty good.

Hated Enemy though. I think that will stay on the bottom of DV's list for a good while.

I watched Polytechnique last night, and WOW. It's an intense 80 minutes of a true massacre I had never even heard about. I will say, Nolan may be more my speed, since his films tend to be more cerebral, but Villeneuve's ability to lean into visceral violence without alienating the audience is masterful.

I started (but haven't finished yet) Incendies as well. Very good so far.

Also, something else I've noticed as a difference between the two is that Nolan tends to struggle with having his female characters be one note, while Villeneuve's are often much more three dimensional.

They are 1 and 2 for me right now, but the competition may be more than I initially thought.

I guess whoever does a western first will win.

I may be opening a can of worms of semantics here, but do you not consider Sicario a western?

Watched Interstellar for the first time in 4-5 years last night. Have had a 3 year old daughter since then who is now the center of my universe. My goodness the scene of him leaving the farm with Murph running out after it's too late sent me into an uncontrollable sobbing fit. A few others hit me hard as well.

Crazy how much less those scenes resonated with me before I could relate on such a level.

Amazing movie all around, CN's best imo.

It's more of a crime thriller than a western, IMO. It's definitely on the edges. Hell of High Water is a movie that's on the "western" side of that line, to me. But it's definitely debatable.

But I'd really like a period western from either or both.

A guy does ride a horse in the background of this scene so it's a Western.

Same. It got me initially, but I re watched last year with my 11 year old girl (roughly Murphs age with the same attitude). Good lord, I can't remember anything pulling tears like that.

I think I'm the only person that loves Christopher Nolan but thought Oppenheimer was "meh". Also felt Insomnia was rather average, but I think that's more because I feel like post-90's, Pacino has become a caricature on screen.
You are not the only one. Meh - that's where I would put it and my wife fell asleep during the movie. He's got amazing movies that make you think and I love. This is not one of them.

Bladerunner 2049 is one of my favorite movies of all time. I've also seen Sicario 4 or 5 times now and it never gets old. For me he has passed Nolan, but that's just my personal taste in movies. Both are great.

Joseph Kosinski is another name for me... Tron Legacy, Oblivion, TG Maverick (the later two being extremely high on my all times list).

I thought the 1940s part of Oppenheimer was great, but I didn't care for the 50s stuff. That's part of my problem with a lot of Nolan movies, especially those made in the last 10 or so years. I really love parts of them, but find some parts just ok.

Wait till you see what Kosinski is doing with Apex, his F1 movie starring Brad Pitt. Summer 2025.
