What kind of person creates socks on a message board to sh*t talk a movie/director? I honestly can't come up with many things more deranged or pathetic.

Otherwise, I just assumed he thought Dune was a documentary and that Villeneuve was getting a cut of that sweet Harkonnen spice $$$.

He posts in a lot of other forums, I think he just gets a kick out of riling up the E board nerds.

Still deranged. Still pathetic. I will never ever understand message board troll culture.

I think I'm the only person that loves Christopher Nolan but thought Oppenheimer was "meh". Also felt Insomnia was rather average, but I think that's more because I feel like post-90's, Pacino has become a caricature on screen.

It will win a lot of awards, but I also thought Oppenheimer was just okay.

Yes. Can argue that he is better in a lot of ways.

Currently I enjoy Villanueve movies more than Nolan movies, but acknowledge both are really, really good.

I think I'd maybe give Villeneuve the nod as he's done what he's done with an assortment of different leading actors (many of which were relatively unknown).

That's not to say his directing isn't great, but when you hitch your wagon to Christian Bale, Cillian Murphy, Matthew McConaughey and Leonardo DiCaprio, it's hard to produce a dud.

Yeah, in addition to Dune: Messiah, Villeneuve is apparently simultaneously developing/co-writing...

Cleopatra
(starring Zendaya in the title role)

Rendezvous with Rama
(which he calls "Arrival on steroids.")

Sicario 3
(rumored but not confirmed)

He said he's almost assuredly doing a non-Dune movie next, so likely one of the three above (or a mystery project we're not aware of), then he'll tackle Dune: Messiah. So 2026/2027-ish for one of the above, then Dune: Messiah for 2027/2028-ish.

Holy crap! I didn't know he was doing a Rama movie! I love that trilogy. ACC's best imo. Read them several times growing up.

Likewise.

I would love to just talk science fiction with Villanueve.

Dude just gets it, and knows how to bring things to the screen He is like Kevin Fiege during the Iron Man to Endgame era with Marvel.

Aside from his obvious handicap in casting, he is slightly an above average director. I'm intrigued by Villenueve's take on Rama. I'd be concerned that most directors would try to jazz it up (in a lot of ways, the first book is really dry), but given the respect that Villenueve has shown for Dune, I'm somewhat hopeful.

I could see him maybe compressing the three books into two movies.

The run he's been on in the past 11 years has been incredible.

Prisoners
Sicario
Arrival
Blade Runner 2049
Dune: Part One
Dune: Part Two

Prisoners is an underrated masterpiece, and Blade Runner 2049 (and from the sound of it, Dune 2) is a sci-fi all-timer.

He keeps this up, he's definitely in that same conversation with Chris Nolan.
Just watched this again a few weeks ago. Agree 100%. Always felt like it should have gotten more love.

Villeneuve is certainly getting closer and closer, but Oppenheimer just took Nolan to a whole other level. With all the awards he's winning, and all the Oscars he's about to win, Nolan is now in rarified air. He's gone from blockbuster guy to now adding prestige awards/drama guy to his resume, something we haven't seen since Spielberg (think Jurassic Park / Schindler's List).

That, and Nolan's name itself has as much brand recognition as most major franchises. Even my sisters and my parents know that when a trailer says "A Christopher Nolan Film" it's a huge deal, and will show up for it.

Villeneuve simply isn't at that level, as most general audiences don't yet know his name. He's also at a disadvantage in that he never had a major superhero franchise like Nolan, which is obviously how Nolan's name became so widely known in the first place.

But Villeneuve will eventually get there, and as of now I think he's just as good, if not even better in certain areas.

All I know is that between them, it's us who wins. Barring any tragedies, we basically get either a Nolan or a Villeneuve movie roughly every year for the next 20 years or so (with gaps here and there, of course). People complain about the movies not being as good as they used to be, yet we've never seen anything like what Nolan and Villeneuve are putting out on a consistent basis. It's just mind-blowing stuff every single time, where they're basically trying to one-up each other each time, while also having become genuinely good friends in the process. It's so awesome to see, and I could not be more grateful that we're here to witness it all.
Something the vast majority of us can all agree on. I get genuinely giddy any time I hear about something knew coming out with their name on it. Protect these men at all costs.

What dirty money??
The Sinaloa Cartel is basically holding the family of DV, the French Canadian director, hostage. Not only washing money through his various ventures, but also taking a significant cut of his rightfully earned funds. If he makes one mediocre movie...they are outside the house of his family and he can kiss his wife and kiddos goodbye. Did you not know this?

Just responding to this guy who seems to think Denis Villaneueve's movies are part money-washing operation. Maybe I am misunderstanding what he is saying altogether?

I love both directors. This question has made me really think about what their differences are and why Nolan is still top for me, although I think Villeneuve is #2 on my list.

Points for Nolan:
1) Nolan made The Dark Knight trilogy and I loved Batman before Nolan, and he just did an all-timer comic book trilogy

2) Nolan made Memento which is THE movie that got me INTO movies. It was the first time I finished a movie and immediately fired it back up to rewatch.

3) Nolan has done more genre exploration in his filmography, so it feels a bit more diverse. I'd love to see Denis do a war movie, or a period thriller, or a straight up biopic.

Still remember watching and loving Prisoners in theaters. Had a good feeling about him back then. Had no idea he would rattle off 10 years of incredible films.

There are really only a few current directors that are close to sure things.

Scorsese and Spielberg are kind of over the hill at this point.

Nolan
Villeneuve
Fincher
Bong Joon Ho
Cuaron
Tarantino

Those are the ones that come to mind.

I haven't liked a Spielberg directorial effort much since Lincoln, and then Munich before that.

He had a great run in the 80s and 90s, but everything post Catch Me If You Can has been pretty miss, IMHO.

I never loved Scorcese as much, but he has been much more consistent over time.

I feel like Scorcese has become a bit of a parody of himself with the last couple (Irishman and Flower Moon). 3 hour long dramas for no other reason than his own ego.

I ironically just rewatched it this morning and I think it has now migrated into my Top 5 movies of all time. del Toro is also the actor I think has been the most underrated in the past decade. Emily Blunt is my most favorite actress and top it off in a morally ambiguous story about a topic I care about and all orchestrated by DV? One of the best story tellers of all time?

Yup. Top 5 all time for me. This train of thought above just solidified it in my head.

Taking out movies adapted from a popular IP, it's crazy that Inception, Interstellar, Arrival, and Sicario all came from those two directors. Each of them are masterpieces in my book, and I knew I was watching examples of why I love movies during the middle of each of them.

Those may be in the top 5 of my favorite movies of the last decade. That's insane.

- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
- Children of Men
- Gravity
- Roma
ha so I've further confused myself so it must be del toro the shape of water guy that's the 3rd big Mexican director but he's a tier below the others

I like Villaneuve, a lot, but every time I think of him I think about him raving about Jared Leto showing up to set, pretending to be blind, and everyone being in awe of it, like "a religious experience."

While we are just mentioning our favorites now, I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that I think Guy Ritchie's last couple of movies have all been fantastic.

The Covenant
Operation: Fortune
The Gentleman

Has Nolan announced what his next movie is?

Just think, that role was originally meant for David Bowie, and it would have been him playing a blind Wallace had he not died. Which could have been much closer to an actual "religious experience."

That said, as much as I can't stand Leto, I actually think he does a great job in the movie. Yes, his method actor bullsh*t is so stupid, and he's annoying as hell as a person, but I thought he was effectively menacing in BR2049.

Sicario is an all timer, a top 15-20 movie of this century. I enjoyed Arrival, but haven't seen it since it's release. For whatever reason, I've had no desire to watch it again. I just can't get into Blade Runner 2049, which is strange, because I love the original. I didn't like Dune at first, but after rewatching it, I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to part 2.
