Has Villeneuve reached Nolan status?

The run he's been on in the past 11 years has been incredible.

Prisoners
Sicario
Arrival
Blade Runner 2049
Dune: Part One
Dune: Part Two

Prisoners is an underrated masterpiece, and Blade Runner 2049 (and from the sound of it, Dune 2) is a sci-fi all-timer.

He keeps this up, he's definitely in that same conversation with Chris Nolan.

For comparison, here's Nolan's resume in his first 10 years.

Memento
Insomnia
Batman Begins
The Prestige
The Dark Knight
Inception
Quad Dog

Villeneuve is certainly getting closer and closer, but Oppenheimer just took Nolan to a whole other level. With all the awards he's winning, and all the Oscars he's about to win, Nolan is now in rarified air. He's gone from blockbuster guy to now adding prestige awards/drama guy to his resume, something we haven't seen since Spielberg (think Jurassic Park / Schindler's List).

That, and Nolan's name itself has as much brand recognition as most major franchises. Even my sisters and my parents know that when a trailer says "A Christopher Nolan Film" it's a huge deal, and will show up for it.

Villeneuve simply isn't at that level, as most general audiences don't yet know his name. He's also at a disadvantage in that he never had a major superhero franchise like Nolan, which is obviously how Nolan's name became so widely known in the first place.

But Villeneuve will eventually get there, and as of now I think he's just as good, if not even better in certain areas.

All I know is that between them, it's us who wins. Barring any tragedies, we basically get either a Nolan or a Villeneuve movie roughly every year for the next 20 years or so (with gaps here and there, of course). People complain about the movies not being as good as they used to be, yet we've never seen anything like what Nolan and Villeneuve are putting out on a consistent basis. It's just mind-blowing stuff every single time, where they're basically trying to one-up each other each time, while also having become genuinely good friends in the process. It's so awesome to see, and I could not be more grateful that we're here to witness it all.

I opened this thread expecting a pitching discussion. Valenzuela never reached the status of Nolan Ryan. No one will.

Dune 2 is Villenueve's chance at Dark Knight.

Watched Oppenheimer again yesterday. Watched Arrival again today. Thinking The Prestige tomorrow and Sicario Saturday, so on and so forth.

I think DV is in the same ballpark. He has made some incredible science fiction movies - Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Dune Part 1, and from what I have seen of Dune Part 2, he is on his way to a similar rarified air that Nolan currently lives in and Spielberg before him. I am legit excited about DV getting to do Dune Messiah, and I am pretty sure I saw his name attached to an adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous With Rama.

Yeah I think this is your second time with almost the exact same comment recommending it. I'm gonna watch tomorrow.

Yeah, in addition to Dune: Messiah, Villeneuve is apparently simultaneously developing/co-writing...

Cleopatra
(starring Zendaya in the title role)

Rendezvous with Rama
(which he calls "Arrival on steroids.")

Sicario 3
(rumored but not confirmed)

He said he's almost assuredly doing a non-Dune movie next, so likely one of the three above (or a mystery project we're not aware of), then he'll tackle Dune: Messiah. So 2026/2027-ish for one of the above, then Dune: Messiah for 2027/2028-ish.

Then again, if Dune: Part Two goes supernova at the box office, I could see Warner Bros offering him whatever he wants to do Messiah next. He said he needs a break from the desert, but an ungodly amount of money might change that. That said, as long as his next movie is at WB, they probably wouldn't mind waiting three to four years for Messiah, to make sure he's recharged creatively and 100% ready to end the trilogy.

If he does Cleopatra he's going straight back to the desert.

Yeah, good point.

It sounds like Rama might be the farthest along?

Either way, we should get some clarity in the next couple of months...

I was thinking about this the other day because they are both my favorite directors working today, and possibly of all time.

I had to give Nolan the edge simply because he has written just about everything he has made. He is more than a great director. Memento, The Prestige, Inception, and Interstellar all being original stories that he created with his brother is another level.

Sicario and arrival back to back is insanely good

Juarez sequence in sicario is the most nervous I've been in movie as an adult

Arrival ending wrecked me

Holy crap! I didn't know he was doing a Rama movie! I love that trilogy. ACC's best imo. Read them several times growing up.

If you ignore the volume edge Nolan has, in my opinion Villeneuve has turned out movies I think are slightly better. I do love Nolan though.

I assume the budget for Rama is going to be like $700 billion.

Obviously unpopular opinion, but while I thought Sicario was fine, movies with that level of violence never make my top list because I'm limited in how and when I can watch movies like that.

Give me a PG13 movie any day of the week over something that I can't watch for fear of my kids walking in to hear f bombs and blood spraying everywhere.

Villeneuve is actually French-Canadian.

As for the other two...

Alejandro Inarritu
- 21 Grams
- Babel
- Biutiful
- Birdman
- The Revenant

Alfonso Cuaron
- Y tu mama tambien
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
- Children of Men
- Gravity
- Roma

Aside from his obvious handicap in casting, he is slightly an above average director. It is very common in Hollywood for the emperor's new clothes phenomenon to make the rounds amongst the "hot" filmmakers. DV just happens to be the current one all those who are in the **quote** KNOW **unquote** are pushing because of his prowess for making dirty money clean in a big way.
