So....this is a movie that definitely doesn't deserve it's own thread (I think) and the only reason I came across this was I decided to click on "Domestic Release Schedule Changes" on Box Office Mojo and it caught my eye....

https://www.boxofficemojo.com/calendar/changes/?ref_=bo_hm_rdc

So is Cinderella no longer protected by copyright as well? I did a quick search and it's a little complicated but technically YES...Cinderella is in the public domain but this is referring to the original story written by the Brothers Grimm...but Disney's version is still apparently copyright protected and you can't retell that exact story without Disney's written consent...

So I looked a little further and apparently these characters/films from Disney are currently in the public domain (there may be more)....

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
The Little Mermaid
Rapunzel
Snow White
Cinderella
Aladdin
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (who?????)
Pete the Cat
Peter Pan
Winnie-the-Pooh & Friends
Bambi
Ebeneezer Scrooge
Sherlock Homes

Now again....this is referring to their original works that were all published before 1927. Clearly there have been films and things like that on a few of these that still retain copyright regarding images and story from Disney and other creators.....but it's interesting that someone could still make films around these characters and get away with it....Why don't we see more of this or is this on it's way?

In the next decade...the following will become public domain as well:

Pluto
Donald Duck
Superman
James Bond

Seems like in the next 10-20 years there's going to be some interesting rights no longer being protected on a lot of iconic properties and curious to see if anything is done with them....

The porn industry should have fun with that list.

a couple of years ago TNT/BBC made a version of A Christmas Carol that was DARK. it went into the origin story of scrooge and how he became so black hearted.

I'm guessing it was a result of the character entering into the public domain.

So Superman appearing in various animated features from DC/Warner Brothers does not count for usage of the character? Or is that not how this works?

I don't think usage protects a property from entering the public domain. Before it enters the public domain, I think it only protects the right holders from not losing the property.
