This one is a tough decision. I've probably listened to movie scores 90% of the time since I was 10 years old, when my dad bought the 2-LP Star Wars record. I listened to that like it was the end of the world. Curiously, I didn't get another such record until The Empire Strikes Back, and after that, I started getting albums from earlier movies that I enjoyed, such as Superman: The Movie and Alien. Yeah, I own some albums from groups like Rush, Styx, Boston, and Foreigner, but listening to those was a rare thing.
My favorite scores have 1 name in common - John Williams. So Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman: The Movie, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Return of the Jedi, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Empire of the Sun, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ... all the way up to the Star Wars prequels and sequels. I could fill many such 10 track lists just from those scores alone.
But I'll go with an alternative list of music that I find myself listening to often, almost as often as anything from the GOAT.
No order.
Patton - Patton Theme (Jerry Goldsmith)
Midway (1976) - Midway Theme (John Williams)
Alien - The Landing (Jerry Goldsmith)
Conan the Barbarian - The Mountain of Power Procession (Basil Poledouris)
Dune (1984) - Desert Theme (Toto)
The Right Stuff - Yeager's Triump (Bill Conti)
Masters of the Air - Soar (Blake Neely)
Wyatt Earp - The Brothers Prepare/The Shootout (James Newton Howard)
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock - Klingons (James Horner)
The Pacific - With the Old Breed (Hans Zimmer)
Others that I could easily name:
The Pacific - Honor (Hans Zimmer)
Capricorn One - Break Out (Jerry Goldsmith)
Dunkirk - Supermarine (Hans Zimmer)
Empire of the Sun - The Plane (John Williams)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Ennio Morricone)
Hook - Remembering Childhood (John Williams)
Interstellar - No Time For Caution (Hans Zimmer)
The Patriot - The Patriot (John Williams)
Saving Private Ryan - Hymn to the Fallen (John Williams)
Superman: The Movie - Prelude and Main Title March (John Williams)
1941 - 1941 Main Title (John Williams)
Battle of Britain - Ace High March (Ron Goodwin)
Captain America: The First Avenger - "Rain Fire Upon Them" (Alan Silvestri)
These lists could go on for a while. My favorite is clearly John Williams. I love Zimmer's work as well and could have easily listed much more of his stuff - Man of Steel, Batman Versus Superman, Gladiator, etc. I don't see Jerry Goldsmith referenced on these such topics that often. That guy was a machine at churning out scores, and he could take on different "sounds" from project to project as Zimmer can. James Horner was great, although his scores tended to contain a lot of brass (Aliens, Star Trek II/III, Commando, even some of Titanic). I tried to include music in my lists from composers other than JW or HZ.
