What are your ten favorite movie soundtracks? Hoping there are some fellow film score lovers on here. I'll list my ten favorite soundtracks and the composer in no particular order, plus my favorite piece from each. Choosing just these ten was extremely difficult.
Score, Piece
  • Interstellar(Hans Zimmer), No Time for Caution
  • The Dark Knight(Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard), I'm Not a Hero
  • The Last of the Mohicans(Trevor Jones), The Kiss
  • Game of Thrones Season 8(Ramin Djawadi), The Last of the Starks
  • Inception(Hans Zimmer), Time
  • The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert For(Nick Cave, Warren Ellis), What Must Be Done
  • Transformers: Age of Extinction(Steve Jablonsky), Hunted
  • Dune(Hans Zimmer), Ripples in the Sand
  • King Arthur: Legend of the Sword(Daniel Pemberton), King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring(Howard Shore), Concerning Hobbits

Talking about scores technically, I guess. My bad for any confusion.

So if you or anyone else is interested...

The Epic Movie Soundtrack Playlist - Spotify

The Epic Movie Soundtrack Playlist - Apple Music

It's actually time for me to update both but they've both got very similar content. I usually listen to soundtracks while I'm working so made this a while back and have kept growing it over time, feel free to recommend additions.

Honestly I could make this whole list out of LOTR. Best score ever made. Gonna keep this to 1 per franchise. No particular order. I could probably name 50 that belong there.

Fellowship of the Ring, Breaking of the Fellowship
Sunshine, Adagio In D Minor
Dune, House Atreides
Top Gun: Maverick, Darkstar/You're where you belong
Apollo 13, All Systems Go
Saving Private Ryan, Revisiting Normandy
Star Wars: Episode IV, The Force Theme
Jurassic Park, Welcome to Jurassic Park
Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark), The Raider's Theme
The Pacific, Honor

I could go on for a very long time.

In no particular order and probably be different if you ask again tomorrow
  • "Gabriel's Oboe" - The Mission (Ennio Morricone)
  • "The Man with the Harmonica" - Once Upon a Time in the West (Ennio Morricone)
  • "Ancora Qui" - Django Unchained (Not sure if this qualifies but it is Morricone, damn it!)
  • "The Map Room" - Raiders of the Lost Ark (John Williams)
  • "Binary Sunset - The Force Theme" - Star Wars (John Williams)
  • "Concerning Hobbits" - Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (Howard Shore)
  • "The Breaking of the Fellowship" - Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring (Howard Shore)
  • "Patton March" - Patton (Jerry Goldsmith)
  • "Harry Lime Theme" - The Third Man (Anton Karas)
  • "A Call to Arms" - Glory or "The Launch" - Apollo 13 (James Horner, yes I'm cheating but couldn't decide between the two)

and since I'm cheating anyways, - "Launch/Staging" - In the Shadow of the Moon (Philip Sheppard)

John Williams at the Hollywood Bowl has been on my bucket list for years. Almost went in 2022, but didn't pull the trigger.

He played the entire final reel from E.T. one year, that would be amazing live.

Great topic and tough assignment to limit to 10...

I'll add some that most folks haven't thrown out there yet that are outstanding... and these may be in my current Top 10 anyway.

1) Road to Perdition, "Road to Perdition" (Thomas Newman)
2) Legends of the Fall, "The Ludlows" (James Horner)
3) Man of Steel, "What Will You Do When You're Not Saving the World" (Hans Zimmer)
4) The Rock, "Hummel Gets the Rockets" (Hans Zimmer)... this was my first attachment to film scores as a teen
5) Dances with Wolves, "Journey to Fort Sedgwick" (John Barry)
6) How to Train Your Dragon, "Test Drive" (John Powell)
7) Rudy, "Main Title" and "Tryouts" (Jerry Goldsmith)
8) Remember the Titans, "Titans Spirit" (Trevor Rabin)
9) The Batman, "The Batman" (Michael Giacchino)
10) The Natural, "The Prologue" (Randy Newman)

Honorable Mention:
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron ("Homeland", Hans Zimmer), Man from Snowy River ("Main Theme", Bruce Rowland), Hoosiers ("Main Theme", Jerry Goldsmith), The Patriot ("Main Theme", John Williams)

While I love the traditional answers of Rocky, Gladiator, Star Wars, E.T., Jaws, LOTR, etc., those felt a bit too easy. If you like those, give some of these a try. Curious if you will connect with any of them.

My wife (also class of '03) has always rolled her eyes at my affinity for film scores... but I would argue they are today's classical music.

Zimmer Chevaliers de Sangreal has got to be up there.

As far as entire sountracks, I can listen to Gladiator all day. There is not a single bad song on there.

The Crow.

Included Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, The Cure, Pantera, and a bunch of other great bands.

This and the soundtracks for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater were some of the biggest influences on my musical tastes as a teen.

For some reason, I've never been someone who's in love with Zimmer's scores. They've been good, but I guess I'm conditioned to prefer those that lean heavier into leitmotifs.

However, Interstellar is one of those scores that I loved and think is such an integral part of the movie. I cannot imagine Interstellar without Zimmer's amazing score.

I was going to list one piece from each, but I got lazy:

1. The Fellowship of the Ring - Concerning Hobbits
2. The Two Towers - Theoden Rides Forth (always brings a tear to my eye)
3. The Return of the King - The Pelennor Fields
4. Interstellar
5. Jurassic Park
6. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
7. Raiders of the Lost Ark
8. Back to the Future
9. The Last Crusade
10. The Godfather

Bah... just saw CaptAmerica03 posted The Batman... damn. I don't know what I would bump off my list for that one, but that was one of the last scores I literally played on loop.

Tron: Legacy by Daft Punk and The Social Network by Trent Reznor were pretty good too.

Tron: Legacy Reconfigured is pretty good as well.

Exactly right. Mozart and Bach and Beethoven wrote lots of music for that days movie equivalent, the opera. Modern day composers write the stuff, but its for film. Something is such an integral part of the storytelling.

Williams, Zimmer, Shore, and Horner are the modern day equivalents and there is no argument. Several of them will be looked back on 250 years from now as the legends that those earlier composers are considered to be now.
