In your opinion, who are some actors/actresses that have had fantastical success despite not having any real talent?
John Wayne was a terrible actor (with maybe a couple of roles excepted) who always played the same character, but he was a hell of a movie star. Kind of like Arnold (especially the Arnold of the 80s and early 90s) - you don't go to see the movie, you go to see them star in the movie.Scotts Tot said:
100%. I have never understood the John Wayne thing. His acting was flat and uninteresting, and his character's persona was pretty much always the same. I guess his role in Hollywood was more about being an icon and a symbol than about actual acting.

There are certain roles that Keanu Reeves is suited for, IMO, and he will knock it out of the park. One of my all-time favorite movies is Parenthood with Steve Martin. Reeves was in that and I thought he was absolutely excellent.bluefire579 said:In other words, a perfect choice for this threadClaude! said:John Wayne was a terrible actor (with maybe a couple of roles excepted) who always played the same character, but he was a hell of a movie star. I'll add Keanu Reeves. Fantastic career, by all accounts a great person, but not a good actor

it's what happens to most actors over time. Pacino, DeNiro for examples.Bregxit said:Bruce Almighty said:

Tom Hanks plays Tom Hanks in every movie. Fight me.
Ok I will give you Forrest Gump.
So does almost every other actor in Hollywood.Bregxit said:Bruce Almighty said:

How you can watch Philadelphia, Saving Private Ryan and Apollo 13 and call his acting bad is dumb.

Parenthood is just an all-time great movie, and Keanu was great but essentially played Ted, which is his strong-suit. His talk with Dianne Weist about young Joaquin/Leaf bopping the bologna is fantastic.DG-Ag said:There are certain roles that Keanu Reeves is suited for, IMO, and he will knock it out of the park.
