After thinking through his movies in the "best year" thread, that dude doesn't get the credit he should for his range. I'm starting to think his name should be right up there with anyone as one of the very best actors of the last 30 years.

Dude can even play Noah, Zeus, Jor-El, and Javert.

What movie is that with him and Gene Hackman?

I realized not long ago that Master and Commander is a top 5 movie for me.

It's so good. Sounds great on surround sound.

his performance in Gladiator is at the top of my list of all-time greats.

This scene and all its ferocity and rage never gets old.

He has a bunch of other movies I'd qualify as "pretty good." Proof of Life, Robin Hood, and The Greatest Beer Run Ever.

I'll throw this out there, too. Unhinged isn't a pretty good movie, but Crowe is pretty solid in it as the crazy truck driving road raged psychopath.

Cinderella Man is absolutely one of the most underrated sports movies. IMO it's up there in the top tier with the likes of Rudy, Remember the Titans, Sandlot, etc.

Another good Crowe movie was Proof of Life. It's no cinematic masterpiece but it was a good entertaining movie that I usually watch if I catch it on.

"Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. I will have my vengeance in this life or the next. "

That whole scene from the battle to Maximus revealing himself is so good.

He also started his career in New Zealand as the musician Russ Le Roq.

Quote:

. . .
He released several New Zealand singles, including "I Just Wanna Be Like Marlon Brando", "Pier 13", and "Shattered Glass". . .

Which soon turned out to be a pain in the ass. [/Blondie]

Good call on the pivot to acting.

Agreed. It's one of my favorite movies. Between what he was dealing with personally, professionally, the time period, etc...there is something about that movie that strikes so many chords and has so many memorable scenes. Ron Howard does a great job of making you understand how desperate people were, and why his story resonated with the country like it did.

Not only was Crowe great but I thought Paul Giamatti and Zellweger absolutely crushed their supporting roles.

Just an all around great movie that doesn't get it's due as a classic timeless sports movie.

For me one of his more overlooked movies is "The Insider". Great movie and great performance by Crowe.

I worked with a guy who was an associate producer on Mystery Alaska. His job was being Russell Crowe's babysitter. Over the course of the shoot, Crowe got banned from every bar in that part of Alberta. Used to be he could drink like a fish and keep the weight off. Now his fat ass is super bloated in every movie he is in.

Crowe is the reason this film works. He's totally...unhinged.

Winter's Tale isn't a good movie, but I've always liked his part in it as the demon "Pearly Soames"
