I was just listening to The Ballad of Jayne by LA Guns and was thinking there are a lot of these type songs I like.

The Ballad of Jane is probably my favorite. I also like Dream On by Nazareth a lot.

IMO, Doesn't need to be slow and sappy. As long as it's story driven and has some imagery of what's happening, I consider it a ballad.

When I deployed in 2010, it was in support of a special operations task force. This was their hold music on the base phone system.

Heart was a band that could rock and also slow things down with nice ballads.

"Dreamboat Annie" and "Dog and the Butterfly" are two examples.
