I looked and found only individual threads, so with this latest news I figured I'd start a franchise thread to cover the rest of the movies.

For the record, as of now…

Avatar 3 = December,19, 2025
Avatar 4 = December 21, 2029
Avatar 5 = December 19, 2031

Avatar 3 has completed principal photography and they've already shot parts of 4. As Cameron tells it…

Quote:

"We did the [motion capture] capture on three and the live-action photography on three as an intermingled production with ['Avatar: The Way of Water'], and we even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big time jump in movie four," Cameron said. "We see them and then we go away for six years and we come back. And so the part where we come back is the part we haven't shot yet. So we'll start on that after three is released."

Considering Cameron said filming the remainder of "Avatar 4" won't occur until "Avatar 3" opens, it appears Worthington and the cast might be returning to Cameron's studio next month for "Avatar 3" post-production needs such as ADR dialogue replacement. Worthington wouldn't disclose the specifics of his return.

The in-universe "go away for six years and then come back" for the fourth movie is due to the action - and at least Zoe Saldana's Neytiri - heading to Earth, which I think could be really cool and a welcomed change to mix things up.

Anyway, we probably won't see a trailer for the third Avatar until spring 2025, but in the meantime, any news/discussion can go here.

Honestly forgot they even made a sequel. I never watched it. Is it worth watching? I enjoyed the first one.

If you enjoyed the first one, then yeah, it's more of the same, really, just with a focus on water instead of the forest. Stunning visuals, a so-so story, giant smurfs fighting angry military types, etc.

Also, side note besides the movies, an Avatar game came out last month. It's not a masterpiece, but if you like the franchise, it does a pretty good job capturing the feel. Plays a lot like recent Far Cry games in terms of gameplay.

If you haven't seen the movie Titan with Sam, check it out. A really good sci fi flick.

I have. I actually like him in most everything he's done. Clash of the Titans, Titan, Terminator Salvation

He can thank Matt Damon for turning it down. Also, with the deal Damon had on the table IIRC he would have made apprx $250MM for the first Avatar alone.

I;m assuming she'll be shot on sight as a foreign terrorist.

I don't even own a PS5, but have been considering buying one, mainly to play all the RE games.

This will certainly be on my list to play if/when I do.

If not, I'll wait for the port to Switch 2.

Matt Damon turned down 10% because he conflicted with one of the Bourne's.

This was the same comment made by literally everyone about the first movie before the sequel came out, predicting the sequel would flop.

I, TC, and a few others were the only ones who were smart enough to never doubt JC.

Speaking of, who's down for some early box office predictions for part 3? It's never too early.

Alright, here's my early BO prediction for 3.

Seeing how Way of Water (and now the video game) re-ignited interest for Avatar and brought in a new generation of fans, as well as the great reception for it, here's what I'm going with...

Domestic: $715M (+4.5% from WoW, -9% from Avatar)
Worldwide: $2.6B (+11% from WoW, -10% from Avatar)

Avatar is weird. Made billions, but has had virtually no impact on culture.

That is weird. Maybe because they're an experiment in FX and marginal stories?

Just cause I'm bored --

If that prediction were to hold, it would put the franchise at $7.8B total worldwide, good for the #7 spot on the all-time highest grossing franchises.

Current franchise rankings (Worldwide):
1. MCU - 29.8B
2. Spider-Man - 10.5B
3. Star Wars - 10.3B
4. HP/Wizarding World - 9.6B
5. Bond - 7.8B
6. Avengers - 7.7B
7. Fast & Furious - 7.3B
8. DCEU - 7B
9. Batman - 6.8B
10. X-Men - 6B

(Seems weird to count the Avengers movies in two separate franchises, but whatever.)

Its average per film would be 2.614B (currently at 2.62B), which is a far and away the best average for any franchise.

Highest average per film ranking (Worldwide):
1. Avatar - 2.62B
2. Avengers - 1.94B
3. Jurassic - 1B
4. Middle Earth - 987M
5. Star Wars (Skywalker Saga) - 978M
6. Harry Potter - 972M
7. Despicable Me - 929M
8. MCU - 903M
9. Pirates of the Caribbean - 904M
10. Spider-Man - 808M

It's OK. ON Disney+ I think. More of the same - but with a different indigenous tribe for the tropical setting and a new cousin Oliver type character added.

Wow..this goes to show how far removed I am from pop culture.

I've 2 MCU movies.
3 Spider Man
11 Star wars
All but 2 of the HP
Haven't seen a Bond film since Roger Moore
I've never seen an Avengers movie.
Never Seen F&F
I don't know what DCEU is. Superman? I saw 1-2-3-4 with Christopher Reeve.
I saw Batman in 1989. I think I saw the Clooney one. Not sure.
Have never seen an X-men

With no big, traditional blockbuster releasing December 2023 or December 2024, I think audiences are going to be starved for one come Christmas 2025. But yeah, it won't be quite as big as the second movie, so this sounds about right. Either way, it'll make bank.

Also, I have a feeling it's going to have somewhat of a sense of finality to it, seeing as there was talk at one point that 4 and 5 might either never get made, or that Cameron might hand the reigns off for those two. Plus, 4 won't come out for another four years after this one, at minimum. Point being, it sounds like three is the end of one story (my guess is Jake dies), which could add to the hype/repeat viewings, and that 4 and 5 are more their own story after that (hence the six-year time jump).

Is #3 the one with the Pron title? TC's reaction to that might be my all-time favorite of his posts.

Probably not worth it at home.

It's absolutely worth watching, even at home. I don't care how much people try and play down these movies, they're incredible, and the second one might even be better than the first. It has everything the first movie has, but with an added Amblin/Spielberg vibe, re: the whole family/kids angle, and I loved every minute.

"The Seed Bearer" has officially been scrapped as the title for the third movie, according to the Jon Landau, the film's producer. We're now waiting on a replacement title to be announced.

I thought it was well worth it to watch in the theatre but without the big screen wouldn't be as enjoyable. Just me.

What? Cmon. That was gold, Jerry, GOLD!

Here are some quick hitter replacement ideas by me.

The Master Shaft
Pandora Penetration
Naughty Naavi Girls 7: Doing it like the Earthlings
Riding the Toruk (I had to look up that name)

Ha, you're actually close on one of those. Of the initial leaked list with the four sequel titles (which named "The Way of Water" long before it was officially announced), "The Tulkun Rider" was/is the title of the fourth movie (while "The Quest for Eywa" was/is the fifth).

Way of Water felt like a James Cameron's biggest hits, in the best possible way. Felt like Avatar, Terminator 2, Aliens, and even a bit of Titanic, all thrown together.

As for Jake dying, I can't remember if I ever posted my theory about that on the other thread, but my theory is Jake dies in 3 and Lo'ak is the one who brings all the clans together for the big climactic fight in 4-5. (And Kiri is definitely gonna play a huge role going forward. She's probably an embodiment of Eywa and will eventually be able to control everything.)

And the seeds have already been planted for Lo'ak and Tsirerya's love story to come into the forefront in 3. They probably lead the armies together eventually.

Spider is interesting, cause I have no idea where his story is going. I think he eventually gets an Avatar body, but I think there's a good chance he flips to the humans' side, especially after Neytiri almost killed him.
