Escape from New York -- the premise of the US just giving up on NY and walling it off into a fend for yourself prison is awesome.
Sounds like a great idea today, actually. Nearly there already.

My favorite premises all tend to involve time travel. When it's done well, the resulting TV/movie plots are a lot of fun.

Groundhog Day (the best, IMO)
BTTF
The City on the Edge of Forever (ST: TOS)

Spider-man: Into the SpiderVerse is the best adaptation of comic book style to film that has ever been done.

The synchronization of action and soundtrack in Baby Driver was very well-done, considering how it tied in with the lead character and the importance of music to him.

Passengers with Pratt

Could've been done much better though

Don't forget Terminator.

And I think we are forgetting a pretty big and novel premise that a lady across the pond came up with, to some success:

A boarding school for kids with magical powers so that they can learn to live in a secret world full of wizards and witches living among us in plain sight.

I'd also like to nominate Edge of Tomorrow; such a good movie and awesome premise.

One of my fav movies of the last 10 years. It and Oblivion I can watch at any time. Funny that Cruise was in both of them.

Memento was an incredible premise and so difficult to make work. Showed where Christopher Nolan would be headed
Nolan has been doing that way too much. While it was great in Momento, it made no sense in movies like Dunkirk.
What
NOLAN HAS BEEN DOING THAT WAY TOO MUCH. WHILE IT WAS GREAT IN MOMENTO, IT MADE NO SENSE IN MOVIES LIKE DUNKIRK.
HOW DID IT MAKE NO SENSE IN DUNKIRK?

No need to yell.. I can hear fine.

Memento made sense because he wanted the audience to experience something similar to what the protagonist experienced. And showing the scenes in reverse did that.

But there is no reason to do that in Dunkirk. He went as far as cutting from day to night, and back to day again in a few minutes. What was to gain by doing that? It was confusing and unnecessary. Why not just go linear in that story like normal? It's like Nolan has to do the non-linear story telling in every movie, even when it makes more sense to simply show it from beginning to end.

Gattaca is one of my favorite sci-fi concepts and a criminally underrated film, still holds up very well both as a story and concept over 25 years later. Interestingly enough, same writer/director as In Time and writer on The Truman Show (Andrew Nichol).

And The Matrix goes without saying, massive influence both in filmmaking style and as a concept.

Wasn't Gattica loosely based on the novel A Brave New World?

Leave no Trace hit me really hard:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3892172/

About a guy with PTSD who isolates from the world with his daughter. Ultimately is a very flexible metaphor about the difficult of really loving someone living with a psychosis / addiction that chooses the psychosis / addiction over a relationship.

Also Ink:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1071804/

Amazing very low budget film that does so well addressing the difficulty of work / life balance issues with a bit of a spiritual warfare background.

Two I can think of:
Jurassic Park. The idea of taking Dinosaurs and placing them into our time thanks to science in the service of capitalism was really inspired and made the novel / movie more interesting than just a rehash of other Dinosaur movies.

King Kong. Not based on any prior material. Think about how bonkers that pitch meeting must have been, "Okay, so we have a giant, GIANT gorilla that lives on a lost island with Dinosaurs. He's captured, brought to New York as part of a show, escapes, and we have a huge shootout on the top of the Empire State Building with airplanes." "Man, this is a bit crazy, are we sure we can't tone it down?" "Oh, and the monkey is horny for blondes." "Uhh…" "Like, super horny."

The Blair Witch Project

I remember a professor at A&M talking about how this was coming out several months before it did. I hadn't heard of this concept prior. Kind of blew my mind.

Maybe not exactly on topic, and may have been surpassed since, but Bruce Almighty was by far the highest price paid for a script at the time, because multiple people knew it was such a great idea that they kept bidding it up.
